The past 17 years have been great , but I didn't start this company so I could be a "CEO". From day one, the mission has simply been to help people get great video work done, and I've been fortunate enough to have enough enthusiasm from clients to be able to hire some people to help make that happen. I'm pretty sure most of dozen or so people I've created various (and usually temporary) full-time positions for over the past 17 years have really enjoyed the gig, but since the only two who've bothered to review my performance as "CEO" seem to suggest I should have done more for them, I'll chime in to say "sorry, you're on your own there." Most jobs in the film industry are short term, usually freelance, engagements, so I'm proud of the fact that I've had a few people who've stuck around for a long time - including clients, employees, and contractors - and those that didn't... probably weren't really the right fit. Filmmaking is an entrepreneurial, personality-driven activity, and success hinges on good communication, teamwork, and an ability to see the work through other people's eyes. That's what I do: I'm going to keep doing it, and I know some people who are glad to hear that. Former employees who (anonymously!) think I should have helped them more, or maybe patterned my day on their personal aspirations? They might want to learn the same.
