Pros

The company has a lot of potential and has had some really spectacular clients.

Cons

My time at Picture Motion was heartbreaking and disappointing. I truly felt as if I was set up to fail in my position. I was placed on a failing project, given no support, and would spend every day crying in the bathroom. The inability for leadership to adequately support the staff was devastating.

Dear Campaign Coordinator - I’m so sorry to hear you weren’t supported. Truly. It’s the worst feeling to feel abandoned and on your own. Its emotionally draining and leads to bad work results. I’m sorry, and this shouldn’t have happened. We tried to have checks and balances in place, and I’m sorry they failed you. We check in with our managers (aka your direct report) every Monday. And in our all hands Friday meetings we always create space for asking for help. If you raised your hand and asked for help to anyone, I am so sorry we all missed it. Alas, it’s a great lesson to me that we must try to find even more ways to create space to make it easier for you to ask for help. Regarding the “failing project,” oh dear I can’t imagine which one that is. No client or film we take on would never be considered a “failure” at the get go. It’s only a failure if we give up on it. And we don’t give up. So I’m sad for our client that you saw it that way. But again this is a learning moment for us to work closer with our coordinators so you and they understanding success metrics, are equipped to better handle challenging work, can find their voice in times of struggle and know how to manage their self care so that no one cries unknowingly in the bathroom daily. Wishing you happiness in your next position. - Christie

Dear Former Manager - Thank you for taking the time to write this review. I know how uncomfortable it can be to share negative experiences. As the founder of the company, I truly wish I’d known that your time here was so difficult. I would very much like to address this so no future employee feels this way. I encourage you to contact me directly. I would happily compensate you as a consultant if you could aid us in fixing the problems you’ve identified. We understand that the films and issues we work on can be very intense. On any given day you may have been working to support refugees or raise awareness of the crisis, combat climate change or promote gun safety. That can be hard work, as much as it can be rewarding. I hope our efforts to provide our staff with a positive and constructive environment help - but we are definitely open to new suggestions. Every Wednesday we have our team lunch where we discuss relevant industry topics, share our learnings from campaigns and bring in outside speakers to provide additional education. On Thursdays we have hour happy hour to kick back (and sometimes vent!) and we not only encourage but also cover the costs for employees to attend movie / festival screenings and expand their industry education and skills. I’m sorry that none of these were considered a “pro.” Additionally, we carve out time to listen to our staff with quarterly check-ins. In your year+ here we had at least four of those check ins. So I’m saddened that besides working every day together and carving out dedicated you-time every quarter, I still had no idea it was this rough. I’m really sorry, and we are adjusting our listening strategy to better receive this information. You are right that some growth here may be limited compared to much larger companies. We are a small company with under 15 employees. But we see growth as more than just a pay raise and title change after a year of being here. We see it as skills learned, industry connections made and work you can be proud to hang your hat on. I’m sorry to hear that you did not find any of these in your role here, and we are certainly learning that we must do better at this. With gratitude for the time you spent with us and the feedback you’ve provided, as that helps us learn and grow. - Christie
