A sad state of affairs

Pros

The building is beautiful, it's fun to be part of Pittsburgh's vibration arts scene, and the people there worth their space make working there very fun and fulfilling.

Cons

You have to wait for someone to die or retire to get promoted or even make a lateral move. Managers do just enough to actually manage, but I did not experience any mentorship. They're great in a crisis, very understanding of extenuating circumstances, etc. But there was no opportunity to work on skills under a supervisor's mentorship; you're pretty much on your own in the arena of self-improvement. Coworkers who don't work enough or impede others' work are not reprimanded. In fact, management seems afraid of them. This brings down morale big time. 80% of the musicians have awful attitudes. They'll argue at the box office window about nog getting enough free tickets while standing in front of people who are about to shell out $100 to sit in the Dress Circle to hear them perform Bolero for the 70th time. They're bossy and treat staff like they're less-than.

All the wrong people are given accolades.

Pros

The majority of the people working there are wonderful. The lower you go on the ladder, the more genuine and hard-working the people are, the more they care about the organization. The young employees are devoted, fun, and hard-working.

Cons

No one is held accountable for when things go wrong, so it makes it hard to care about things going right. The lowest-paid people are the ones running the place, and the highest-paid people get all the credit, even though they have slowly driven the organization into the ground. The orchestra is magnificent; unfortunately, they are a bunch of morose snobs who think the staff live to serve them and not the *patrons.* Going to a performance is a big bummer because the performers look annoyed and irritated the entire time instead of, you know, like they are getting paid six figures (STARTING SALARY) to do what they love every weekend. There is no communication and all of the supervisors push their responsibilities off because no one likes conflict, which results in some gross people eeking by and bringing the work quality down.

Lacking vision for the future

Pros

It is possible for a young person entering the field to get a lot of experience quickly. The orchestra is very good.

Cons

The organization has absolutely lost sight of its mission, and there is no meaningful vision for the future. Sole focus is on finances, which causes moral to be very low. There is a large responsibility (and pay) gap between VPs and next level below, with very little meaningful delegation of ownership and decision making.
