I had to tell a friend not to work here

Pros

Lots of Microsoft awards from the past.

Cons

My friend said they had been recommended to Planet but was concerned that the reviews were all over the place. As I read the reviews, good and bad are both right. I'll try to explain. You're hired in with a good story. You're busy immediately, the pay and benefits are decent. But as time goes on, you realize there are dark under currents here. If a project goes poorly, the project managers start back biting. We've had to fire 2 project managers in 6 months because they didn't know what they were doing. Burn out is high - we've lost 3 managers in 3 years. The company runs like 3 separate organizations, and the owners don't like each other. It's closely held and as a consultant you ABSOLUTELY have to understand you are a commodity. Someone told me that when a bad review was posted, that some people were paid to write a good review to counter it. I don't know if that's true, but it would certainly fit the Ra Ra culture. There's also a lot of tell the customer we can do anything and then figure it out.

We are so proud of our team and feel they are the "best of the best" and that is what attracts people to Planet.so that they can work with Microsoft Masters, MVP's, authors but more importantly, just all around good people. We measure a person on character first. "Hire Character, Train Skill". It is what we are about and put this into practice every day through internal discussion groups where consultants share best practices and provides a real time forum to get support from our broader team so no one is ever alone. One Planet! Since you are no longer here, I would suspect that you would not refer a friend. I would not do so either if things did not work out for me for some reason. However, our team has been built on internal referrals and we pay a bonus each time that happens. In the past year we paid out the most referral bonuses in our history! Go Planet!!

Pros

I won't say this is a bad company to work for because that's not true. I will say, however: Know what you're getting into before accepting an offer. Carsten Due is, honestly, the best thing about Planet Technologies. He is currently the Managing Architect, and he's the best because he's a great technologist, he is always there to help, and he listens. Carsten is trying to affect change at Planet, which is desperately needed. Specific Pros: - Salaries are good. - The delivery teams are awesome. - Lots of great people. - Tons of opportunities to learn new things.

Cons

- Planet does not operate leveraging any known, well-used industry standards in terms of project management, process, or procedures, which makes it really hard to deliver. - Almost no one who works at Planet have any enterprise experience, particularly those who have worked at Planet for a long time--and it shows. - The pre-sales team is a one-trick pony, selling the same project over and over and over. - Architects spend 90% of their time doing hands-on engineering/implementation work, which we may enjoy from time to time, but it's not architecture. - The Statement of Work contracts really, really suck, which always ends up throwing the delivery teams under the bus--and upper management doesn't acknowledge this and are resistant to fixing a problem they don't believe exists. Simply put, the content, terms, and conditions you would expect to see in a written, binding contract are completely absent. - The kindest thing I can say about Planet's benefits package is that it's anemic; at worst, I can describe it as: "Why even bother offering benefits?" Medical/dental/vision is available (high deductible), and it was only this year they bothered to add an HSA, which the company contributes nothing to. There is a legal plan, which is nice to have but I'd take other benefits over this any day. They offer public transit and parking subsidies, which is completely useless post-COVID. (Why are they offering this again?) The 401k is the absolute worst I've ever seen with a 2% match up to 4% of your contribution. There are no other benefits or perks. - No bonus structure. At. All. In an industry that offers bonuses as a standard just for getting someone to sit in their chair, this is woefully inadequate. - Upper management (e.g., the owners and VP-level executives) are completely out of touch, don't understand, and don't seem to care. (At least one of them is also arrogant beyond belief, which I know because of the way he spoke to me during our initial meeting, in the first five minutes.) - 90% of the clients/projects are very small.

Appreciate the feedback and as a growing organization that is creating new opportunities for those individuals that are looking to grow, we are also continuing to retain and attract some of the best and brightest talent in the country. Many on our team are celebrating 5, 10, 15, 20 and now 25 year anniversaries. Sorry things did not work out for you at Planet but we can agree on one thing, Carsten is excellent.

Pros

Salary is nice. Some customers will be missed. Coworkers good.

Cons

Only pure evil employees are welcome on the management team. Vacation policy is substandard and embarrassing. Seriously who does 2 weeks in this industry? Get with it. As far as reading other reviews, I wasn't going to write one but after reading some of the "great reviews" that come immediately after more negative, honest reviews I wonder if the HR team is paid to respond with five star reviews to counter any criticism. The three star and less reviews reflect my experience as a whole a lot more than this vague five star "everything is super" type of comments. Everything is not super. i Would not advise working here unless you want to stay in one place forever with no promotion, ever. And be prepared to eat, drink and snort Microsoft Sharepoint as if its the second coming. I would have stayed, i had a good paycheck and my reviews were great, but my new manager needed to feel competent and secure and that means getting rid of everyone remotely qualified so she can look best in comparison. So being shown the door was a blessing. Let the poison feed off itself.

Thank you for the feedback. At Planet, we provide 3 weeks combined vacation which increases over time commensurate with your years seniority. We are experiencing our most growth in the history of the company this year which creates significant opportunity for people to lead and grow as well. In the past 6 months alone we have experienced a 10% growth in staff with some of those senior level individuals consisting of people that went on to work for Fortune 500 organizations and came back to be with our team again.
