Pros

Pretty unique and challenging business model

Cons

Pre-COVID and post-COVID have been a tense few months here at plastiq. 20-30% of employees have been let go. We find out in a weekly announcement email and it’s the first headline every plastiq employee looks out for. Who got fired this week? I definitely feel nervous about my job. The people team hasn’t been entirely transparent with all the layoffs. And folks who have worked at plastiq for more than 3 years aren’t even given the opportunity to send out a goodbye message. Their slack profile just shows deactivated. There’s little to no communication. Also, the engineering management is extremely inexperienced. From what I gather, most of the managers have been at plastiq for more than 2 years and have been promoted within the company, never having management experience in the past. As an engineering manager, it is your job to bring in a wealth of knowledge and experience to the team. And to be active participant in engineering decisions. Whether that be proposing new architecture designs, pushing for new tools, sharing helpful articles, etc. I see little of that. Teams seem to be guided mostly by the product managers and the engineering managers are all talk. This issue goes all the way up to leadership. Every meeting we hear talk of how great the team is and how great the product. But we don’t get much actionable items, just pep talk day in and day out. There needs to be more doers, not talkers at plastiq. You know who you are.

Pros

The Design Team is very nice and great to work with. A few nice co-workers.

Cons

I am writing this HONEST review to sincerely help WARN potential employees here. I want to protect people from going through what I did. Consider this a public service to the workers of the Bay Area. Honestly. This place is INCREDIBLY disorganized and extremely TOXIC. There is NO open communication or transparency here. That is why the Chief Technology Officer quit suddenly and fled to the East Coast, because he could not deal with the chaos and craziness. No industry best practices are implemented or used at Plastiq, not Tech or Finance best practices. The Executive Team does NOT know what they are doing. They have NO expertise in building and launching REAL fintech products. They lie to you, and say that they are going to go public, and you will make millions in stock. This is ALL BS. The CEO's plan is to try and grow the user-base and then sell the company to Visa or MasterCard, or a Big Bank and collect all the money for himself. The CEO personally fired/pushed out his co-founder, who was his Harvard buddy.... Is that the kind of leader you want to work for? He says he has an "Open Door Policy." He does. If you say anything he doesn't like, you get KICKED out the Open Door!--with NO warning or reason given. The Engineering Team is composed of ALL Junior Engineers claiming to be Senior, but they do NOT know what they are doing and cannot even develope simple, basic e-commerce functionality which is essential for a Finance App, like log-ins and Account Management dashboards. ALL of the Engineers and Product/Project managers are deathly AFRAID of speaking up and saying anything because they are afraid of looking weak and getting fired. This is the same situation for Marketing and Product Teams. Nobody can contribute any ideas or suggestions, because they are afraid of getting pushed down, stabbed in the back, and/or fired. As a result, MAJOR problems and issues do NOT get resolved, because NOBODY talks about them! There is NO coaching from your manager, NO setting of expectations, NO introductions to the right players and people you need to work with. They have a "People Team" that does nothing to actually help the people working there. They simply lie to get people in the door, and then ignore them if they have any problems. There is NO feedback from your manager, NO performance reviews, and NO feedback provided to help you do your job better, not even informally. There is NO transparency and NO open communication. As a result, there is NO real collaboration, and no progress is made. I am being absolutely REAL and honest with this review, because I want people to KNOW what they are getting into before they accept an offer. After working at Plastiq, I can honestly tell you that 95% of the Glassdoor reviews are FAKE, and written by the RECRUITERS so they can lure you in. That is how they got me.

A rocket ship that is headed to irrelevancy

Pros

Compensation is fair and market based for base salaries. Benefits are great as well. There are some really smart individuals within the organization.

Cons

Everything else not mentioned in the Pros. The product is subpar. It is not scalable and is definitely only useful for SMB's but the extremely poor leadership team wants enterprise level businesses to embrace. Not gonna happen. Within 6 months of joining the ELT pushed out two presidents, a CRO and a CMO. Bottom line, if you have any opinions that are different from what the CTO thinks, you might as well say goodbye now. After a failed funding round, which we were told "the check is already written" and a subsequent layoff, the CEO decided he's ready for his exit strategy. If you're thinking that fintech is exploding, you're right, but THIS fintech is about to blow up and not in a good way. Good luck to everyone who survived the layoff, for now. If I was a betting man, I'd put money on Plastiq becoming irrelevant before the end of 2022.

We understand everyone has their own experience and we value hearing your perspective. We acknowledge that it can be difficult when there is a change in leadership. We would be remiss if we didn't point out that there are pieces to this review that aren't factual and unfortunately we aren't able to correct due to their confidential nature. We are a resilient bunch, believe in our product, and are excited about what's around the corner. We wish you good luck and thank you for your contributions to Plastiq.
