Rare opportunity company

Pros

I joined the company when it was relatively small. The rapid progress of the company to solid standing in terms of structure and processes was spectacular. Definitely, a place where you need to work. If you are looking for a quiet harbor, where everything is the same every day - this isn't the right spot. Evolution and expansion of the company are fast, which obviously requires people to pay attention to processes and procedures in place, and to what they do because it has long-term consequences. There are a lot of hard-working individuals who are always up for a challenge, even at junior levels. There are also a lot of senior people at the company who you can talk to easily, without going through a typical corporate hierarchy. A place where you can learn, lots of available resources - online acadamies, conferences, and beyond. Probably one of those rare places where you can go to your manager (or anyone all the way up to CEO) and say you don't like something, you see problems somewhere, or you need something. Either him / her or someone else will be able to help. Compensation and benefits are on par with the market. There is also a possibility to own some equity. Location is amazing, probably the best you can get in Santa Monica. Projects portfolio also grows and will probably extend substantially in the nearest future.

Cons

Fast pace didn't come without a toll, some people didn't stand it. You need to work, and if you want to explore your potential and try to make a difference - this is the place. If the goal is to get a steady slow pace job - this isn't the right one. The company still positions itself as a startup, and while financially it is in a good shape, staff-wise requires a lot of positions to be filled in. So, not everything is finalized and some things are created as needed.

Silo'd & Politicized Mobile Start Up

Pros

Small, intimate team Interesting location in Santa Monica near 3rd Street

Cons

Every team is extremely silo'd with management taking meetings independently and with very little transparency. This is a small startup and to have a culture that is founded in need-to-know basis and top down management is not befitting the healthy growth needed at this nascent stage. Management consistently changes scope and overrides decisions that were made by those who do the work, changing the design of features, UI, etc. with very little care to engineers, producers and PM resulting in scrambles and last minute heroics. Also, why is the office so quiet? You can hear a pin drop. For a mobile gaming company, the energy is severely lacking and it feels like a sweatshop. You basically come in, dont talk to anyone and do your work. Some people might like the entire heads down approach but to develop games you need solid collaboration and discussion. The office is so eerily quiet almost as if people are afraid to talk and make noise because management is within earshot. A company culture that has hints of reprimands or fear of speaking out because you may get admonished, embarrassed, etc. are all signs of weak leadership and management. Lastly, while the owners will gain the lions share of profits, they won't be able to expand beyond their capacities if they continue to be clones and knock offs of other match 3, casual game studios. The studio is essentially a wanna-be Rovio and while that will generate revenue for the company and create jobs, it certainly won't be an innovative or exciting place to work.

The place to be in Silicon Beach!

Pros

Location, location, location!!! Great offices, location next to the beach and the 3rd St promenade. Take your morning coffee looking at the beach and the pier! Awesome work life balance, for real! They know that people have lives outside of work and everybody is on board with this being a core component of PlayQ. Great projects, highly polished. The users and the quality of the project are really important. Modern and cutting edge technology, with an awesome roadmap.

Cons

The benefits package is ok, but not on par with larger studios. So its not complete and cost a little more. But once again, it is OK, you and your family will be covered and protected.
