Pros

Sometimes interesting clients. Room for friendship with colleagues if it’s your first job post uni.

Cons

If you want to succeed at Portland just be prepared to be a work 60hrs week +. It’s the only way for advancement. Toxic work environment: I won’t go into specifics but managers can be quite mean and unhealthy towards juniors. Bonus: we have still yet to be paid our promised annual bonus from July… further, if you quit, you are no long entitled to it. Role: no one will teach you anything you just have to “figure it out”… Everyone at portland is miserable because of reasons listed above (among many others). Therefore, the culture can be quite unsettling. I have regular panic attacks just thinking of it all.

Pros

- Quitting - Having entertaining horror stories to tell

Cons

Where to begin? During a recent mass exodus of staff, people's leaving speeches regularly told "funny" anecdotes of outgoing employees crying or breaking down at their desks. If that's not a red flag, not sure what is! People are some of the rudest, most self-entitled people I've ever come across. Zero manners or concern for others' wellbeing, just self-aggrandizing egomaniacs who think they're a lot smarter than they really are. People stay at Portland for years despite the dire company culture and miserable prospects because they think it's a great stepping stone. In reality, it's turning more toxic by the day and I imagine it will encounter the same fate as Bell Pottinger before too long. If you have morals, don't bother coming to Portland. You'll be asked to work on some questionable clients. Any moral objections will be disregarded.

Pros

- Generally exposed to high-profile clients - interesting topics to work on - a lot of smart people to work with (but the culture makes it difficult to connect! It’s very clicky)

Cons

- All company meetings show high levels of dissatisfaction (no work-life balance, hierarchical company, big egos in the company). How Portland addresses it? Giving free pizza and drinks at the office. - they blame “agency life” for everything that doesn’t work in their advantage - senior leadership has bad management style, many love to be “feared” or feel too “powerful” … very high school like behaviour, noticeable during socials - for more evidence ask about turnaround or former “Portlanders” who have experienced this. workplace to avoid!
