Engineer with Electrolysis department in Press Metal Bintulu
Pros
Accomodation and bus transport provided.
Cons
A very outdated style of work employing excessive manual labour, your jobscope can be changed as the management like within the same department, the company is as big as a small town but there is only one canteen which isn/t practical to get to for a lot of the departments. There is only Digi reception at the company accommodation, no signal whatsoever for other telcos. Its in the middle of nowhere, 2hrs drive to Miri, 1.5hrs drive to bintulu town. production side will work in shifts, the rest days between shifts is wayyy below industry standards for an executive/engineer level. For those reading this review are probably getting an offer for associate engineer, the pay is average for sarawak industry and they'll probably hire someone with working experience doing the same job as a fresh graduate hire but the difference in payscale can differ by a few thousand ringgits between the fresh graduate and the experienced hire, but the experience in terms of growing into a competent engineer in the future is not worth it, sure it will build your character doing very laborious tasks but at what cost to your future development, especially after taking a 4 year degree for those wishing to become a competent engineer. More importantly those ISO standards that they have are all just paperworks with what seems to be very substandard governance on the actual practices stated by the ISO, the work practices inside the production line often involve very hazardous activity (in no other place have I ever witness the plethora of work practices that are executed by the China contractors being done without even a safety officer present to ensure the work done are done safely, using only single sling to lift almost everything except the sky, it can't be that bad you might be wondering, that's what i thought too after consulting with acquaintances in sarawak before coming to the company, but it is and frankly worse) which frequently cause horrific injuries, keep in mind you will be dealing with molten temperatures reaching 900degC, yes as an engineer you are expected to regularly go to the site and do work there, the interview session will try to convince you otherwise but you read it here yourself first hand the working conditions which are very very dusty from all the alumina and carbon dust, the heat from molten aluminium. Its a very large corporation with the mindset of your typical shoplot local chinese company focusing on profit while trying to find where they can exploit more from their employees. FYI this writing is a very factual and neutral point of view because I believe you should be ready to face these situations if you decide to work there. I resigned from my position because they promised to offer a more senior position and jobscope but didnt deliver upon me arriving there and I am very passionate into growing into a more complete professional in the industry and this company does not provide that future and I have work for a few other companies before coming here to make a fair observation and the apparent cons of working in this company.
