Pros

Remote is a huge plus. Decent compensation. The other departments have some good people and are very welcoming.

Cons

Where do I even start? The legacy system is a mess and breaks all the time. However, there will never be a priority to replace it. There is a "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality even though it is always broken. New ideas are NOT welcome. The worst part is the management. Never have I worked at a company where it was commonplace for bullying and gaslighting to occur, especially from the person who is supposed to be your manager. I dreaded every one-on-one because all it ever consisted of was "I'm right, you're wrong. Everybody on the team hates you". My confidence was shot and it took me leaving the company and thriving in my new role for me to figure out that I am great at my job. I've seen multiple promising and kind-hearted individuals have to leave because they were bullied out of their positions. I even know one person who contemplated changing career paths because this "manager" put it in their head that they should never be a programmer. Some integral coworkers had to leave for butting heads which I'm sure cost the company a fortune. This should not be acceptable work behavior and now that I left I realize that I should have spoken out and done more for my coworker's sake.

Pros

Mostly good people, and the tech stack isn't too overwhelming compared to larger products of this nature. Lots of ability for growth. Like, a LOT. Mostly due to the small size and high turnover.

Cons

This company is just not configured to scale, resulting in high turnover within development departments. Other Software Engineers often complained about being underpaid for the amount of work being given and while I didn't personally experience underpayment, I agree about the workload aspect. This company needs a team of really good senior engineers and a robust I.T and Cybersecurity department. Otherwise they will constantly be fighting against the limitations of such a small development team. Expecting your team of 5 developers (all but 2 are junior/mid level) to deal with cybersecurity, CI/CD, infrastructure, refactoring old code, AND a new greenfield project all at the same time, isn't reasonable or scalable. The person who managed me is/was a micromanager that uses sarcasm in a way that was abusive to me and would frequently refer to other teammates in demeaning ways. They seem to think they were given a "low performance" team, but then sought to replace them. This was the primary reason for my departure. All in all, I'd recommend avoiding this place. I've seen quite a few SAAS/PAAS startups transition from startup to an acquisition before and this place is missing key organizational pillars that will prevent them from succeeding. You can only run a skeleton crew for so long.
