Pros

- amazing people - learn a lot about how fortune 50 companies operate - fast paced, never a dull moment - best practices, conferences and retrospectives continuously being improved upon - nice offices and benefits

Cons

- solutions barely go beyond random forest, and are simply ‘transactional’ i.e building models is all Partners care about, not integration. - becoming McKinsey & Co way of working more and more every day i.e ‘up’ or ‘out’ promotion mentality - you are punished for not thinking pyramid principle. - the company is treated like a ‘functional department of McKinsey & Co’ now, where people move on from project wins but interrogate failure. - expect late hours and weekend working where you are questioned for not giving more than asked for. - executive committee hardly visible to the people who hold the company together.

Pros

* Amazing people: made lifelong friends, and had the chance to work with some of the most talented people I've met through my career across all levels from interns to Jeremy (our CEO) * An amazing culture (in QB\Labs) : autonomy, a startup culture, caring leadership, interesting and challenging work, quick progression (if you're good) and lots of trust, flexibility and fun. The ability for everyone to have a voice and have it matter. * Learning: an unparalleled focus on learning and development, with some of the most helpful and thorough performance reviews, as well as training opportunities. A real culture of learning and a sense of everyone pushing themselves, with lots of feedback.

Cons

* Compensation: uncompetitive and unfulfilled promises to make it better. Hard truth is that the very top of McKinsey cannot envisage paying technologists more than themselves. * Eroded culture: towards the end of my time there, the culture was heavily eroded by the huge influx of McKinsey consultants being shoe-horned under the QB brand. QB leadership replaced with McKinsey leadership. It's a shell of its former self. * Talent: Lots of the initial good talent has fled the company, including co-founders and those that joined in the early days due to the above. A marked decrease in the quality of new hires to replace them. Focus on diversity and inclusion over talent and ability.

Pros

QB is simply at the top of the field when it comes to real-world data science. I recommend working here for any data scientist who is optimizing for growth and learning (both in terms of technical skills and generalist skills). As a part of McKinsey with a unique culture, I love the community of QB data scientists who are still very tight-knit despite sprawling over many time zones!

Cons

This is both a pro and a con: as a client-facing data scientist, you will work extensively with non-technical McKinsey consultants and partners. This can be great to developing "both sides of your brain", as you need to get really good at communication for a non-technical audience. However, it can be quite frustrating at times because leadership doesn't always understand what data science is or what data scientists can do (their imagination can sometimes be stuck in the "business analyst world", even though they say they want advanced analytics). I think this is changing/getting better, but whenever things have been frustrating on a project it has tended to come out of a disconnect between the consultant and data scientist worlds on a project.
