Pros

It's a reputable Hawaiian org and can be a good career progression in some cases.

Cons

The medical side of Queen's is known to be toxic. But I came in to the IT side as a neutral person with respect for the one of the oldest and largest orgs in the nation. Queen's part of a multi-billion dollar set of companies so I assumed they have good budgets and attract good talent. This is not the case, especially with IT. Lots of people were burned out but continuing their roles and taking on roles they shouldn't have (thanks to the concept of seniority). Lots of the top individuals moved on within a couple of years. IT is underfunded and managers are always quitting or moving around. You may be in a good team or in a toxic one -- who knows.

Worst Job I’ve ever had

Pros

None. The only good things I can think of are some of the lower level employees are ok and the cafeteria has decent food.

Cons

This review is for the big island hospital of queens health system not Oahu facilities. Can’t think of a worse time in my professional career than the time when I was working in this company. Pto is a joke. They make you use your own time off in order to get paid for federal holidays. I don’t even know how that’s allowed. Accrual rate for new people is about six hours every two weeks but with a holiday every month, you never get a chance to build pto for yourself. Pay is low- $17.50 an hour. Definitely Not worth all the stress. I was constantly belittled by other department managers while my own manager allowed it to happen. No communication or sense of unity or wanting to solve problems between employees or managers- instead other departments and managers/directors blame each other and backstab then exchange pleasantries in the hallway. Patients are constantly unhappy and asking questions about what to do and what’s the process because every few months management changes and policies change. Employees are overworked, stressed, and frustrated daily. One scheduler for CT and MRI procedures with list of hundreds of patients. Patients constantly fall through the cracks in every department because of lack of help. Burnout rate is very high- no one stays past 1 or two years unless they’re desperate. Management constantly preaches about community and how queens is a family but no one practices that. When confronted about something going wrong, directors refuse to acknowledge the problem because their egos are so fragile, any kind of criticism is seen as a personal attack. They’ll knowingly keep incompetent people in positions of power because they are friends. Ask anyone who was a former employee at that hospital. It’s impossible to find one person who has had a positive experience in the big island facility. HR is no help. If you complain, it goes nowhere and they label you as a problem employee and gaslight you into thinking you’re the one with an issue. Unfortunately, I was excited to work here when I first got hired because Honolulu and Ewa facilities have great reputations but big island branch will tarnish any good name Queens has. Management here was informed multiple times about safety concerns and the response they gave employees was suck it up and stop being dramatic. Unbelievable. This is by far the worst place I’ve ever worked at and would never return.
