Great Benefits, Low pay

Pros

The company is consistent and fairly employee focused. They treat people well.

Cons

Upper management has a great attitude toward change, but doesn't willingly change. They make decisions, but don't stick with the change much. Benefits may be great, but the salaries are low and they hide behind the benefits.

Thank you for taking valuable time out of your schedule to review RJG®! We’re glad you feel that as a whole, we treat people well. That has always been at the center of our core values. That’s why we’re sorry you experienced frustration over salary levels and some of our responses to ideas and change. Our rapid growth over the past several years has created many challenges that we are working toward improving. Change doesn’t happen overnight and we are in the process of reviewing the issues you have raised to continue to explore how we can remain competitive and value and implement new ideas that can benefit our team members and the company. We are sorry to hear that you feel our pay may not be adequate. One of our primary objectives is to have a total compensation package that is competitive and sustainable for a healthy company. Our family focus means that providing exceptional benefits for the entire family is part of our core values and at a time when many employers are cutting benefits or shifting costs to employees, we have successfully maintained benefits that are in the top 2% of employers in our region. We believe our total benefit and compensation package works well however we are aware that it may not be ideal for every team member or situation. We appreciate your feedback and will continue to evaluate our compensation model to ensure it is fair and competitive. Your review has been shared with our Leadership Team and we will take your feedback into consideration as we continuously try to improve. Should you wish to discuss this further, please contact Jeannette at jeannette.storms@rjginc.com. Thank you again for providing feedback on Glassdoor.

Pros

-Headquarters in beautiful northern Michigan -Health benefits are decent -Closed most holidays -Bring your dog to work

Cons

Management lacks decision making capabilities and 70% of the people who work here are managers. Company culture is poor and morale is low (saying your culture is good doesn't automatically make it that way). They advertise on their job postings about playing with Nerf blasters and bringing your dogs to work, but those things are frowned upon of you actually partake. Favoritism is rampant throughout the company as most people who work here are related to at least one other employee. That said, it's not uncommon for one employee to be reprimanded for an action that may cause a different employee to receive positive reinforcement. Pay is borderline laughable for the industy, especially if you're a long term employee. They say they like to promote from within and "grow" their employees, but expect to be paid less than half of the industry standard if so. Even new employees starting here can expect to be underpaid considerably. Expect "a view of the bay is worth half your pay" or "our benefits are really good" types of excuses while they apply a pay scale factor to the industry compensation standards. Managers have no real management experience and they often base their strategies and decisions on whatever management book sold cheaply on Amazon that month.

Pros

Growing company with great people, unique culture, career growth opportunities, and excellent benefits. RJG tries to go the extra mile to treat employees with care and respect. Employees are encouraged to grow with the business and RJG invests in their employees through training and tuition reimbursement programs.

Cons

Traverse City is a great place to live, but it is a small town so work opportunities are limited in the region.
