Nepotism reigns supreme

Pros

If you are related to the owner, or one of his cronies - then things will be great. There are some nice people working there. Interesting technologies and projects, when the right contracts are won.

Cons

Low wages, and you will be "low-balled" and taken advantage of even more if you are out of work/laid off when you apply. Personnel are not reviewed annually or on any regular basis at all. Some people have gone over 10 years making the same rate. People are working with toxic substances, sometimes without adequate training and knowledge of their rights. Friends and relatives are promoted to positions of authority, but may not be qualified. Many workers are generally disrespected; and there is little chance of growth. People driven to do better, improve or change things are pushed out.

Always in poor financial shape

Pros

Nice equipment but not well maintained, some great co-workers.

Cons

The company is always on the verge of bankruptcy. This translated into not being able to get supplies, no raises and layoffs as soon as a project ends. If raises do happen they are typically lost a year or so later assuming you still have a job. Management is made up of people who agree with whatever the owner wants. There is not a lot of competency in management so mistakes and lost work runs is common. But it should be noted that only relatives to the owner hold position with any real power to effect change. There is no real worker safety program. QA/QC is a rubber stamp. Move on to a more professional organization where you might have a chance to grow in your career.
