Revolving Door - things to consider before accepting an offer

Pros

Amazing, hardworking, supportive staff. Overall a good learning experience since you'll work your butt off. However, it is worth noting the 5 star reviews are unfortunately not real. While there is some truth to them, most (if not all) are from management and it would not surprise me if a positive review pops up after this.

Cons

There's a reason why there is such a high amount of turnover and it's insane to me that leadership doesn't seem to understand that they are the problem. They overpromise things to clients that are unrealistic then put an insane amount of pressure on junior staff (all staff I should say). Instead of hiring more senior staff, it seems they would rather hire junior staff to pull the same weight. It's 2022 and they think they're on to something by letting people WFH/ have a hybrid model.

Not what it seems

Pros

Great clients. Staff is smart and hardworking. However...

Cons

There's a reason they have such high turnover for such a small agency; leadership has major, major issues with micromanagement. I don't know if it's an issue with scaling their growth, but having to CC the CEO on EVERY email is not normal. They lack (or won't pay for) many standard industry tools and technology, making it unnecessarily harder for everyone to do their jobs. Most only stay for a year or less until they burn out and move on.

Listen to the red flags

Pros

Great experience working with some great clients, but not the worth the stress and

Cons

Take the reviews as red flags. The high turnover is a problem in itself and it's all thanks to management's lack of trust in their employees. It feels like a daycare for adults due to the constant micromanagement and you feel bad for walking away from your computer for even 5 minutes to grab a cup of coffee. Always on call and working way past business hours. Most burn out within 6 months and leave.

Rachel Kay Public Relations Response

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry we weren't the right fit for you. I do think it's critical to note that while PR agency life is not always a 9 to 5 job, we offer some of the best work life balance in the industry, including half day Fridays year-round, 20 days PTO plus many paid holidays, a wanderlust vacation stipend, and virtually no weekend work or events. We have never expressed any requirement for anyone to be on-call or reply to things afterhours unless it’s an absolute emergency. We are still working from home 100% of the time and encourage our team to find balance in their daily schedules, which includes taking breaks throughout the day. When we do return to the office, it will be only one day per week so we have the chance to collaborate in person and give the team a chance for fun and facetime, which we think is critical for the professional development of our team and important for an industry that is based on the cultivation of relationships. Please feel free to reach out to me personally with additional feedback and I wish you the best in your next professional endeavor.
