Extremely discriminatory and poor work culture

Pros

A strong fundraising team and ED who are able to raise money effectively. Great health benefits, and ideas/practices to create more work life balance (time off).

Cons

The work environment was extremely toxic and quite racist. It is an organization rooted in white environmentalism and parachute campaigns in the developing world. There were very little diversity in the organization, and very low retention for the few people of color who enter the organization. The emphasis on creating middle management lead to vpoor management and lack of opportunity for the employees (especially people of color) on the lower levels. The HR was also extremely lacking in knowledge of how to handle interpersonal conflicts. Overall the environment very in professionalism. On more the one occasion I saw belligerent behavior (likely caused by alcohol) at organizational events and retreats. The external campaigns reflected the inward environment, without a real cultural understanding of the communities being served, and a high level of savior complex. It was extremely difficult to give suggestions around changing the campaigns or any sort of feedback at all regarding the external work.

Pros

Great PTO and flexible hours.

Cons

Terrible pay. I tried to make it work at RAN but the pay was unlivable, especially since I would like to have kids some day and need to start building a career. There can also be a lot of hostility and low morale here. Your experience will depend entirely on your manager, so good luck, but the odds are not in your favor. It makes me very sad that I felt like I had to wait so long to write this review because I could be blacklisted in the environmental justice world if I was identified, but RAN can be toxic I felt I had to.

Pros

Savvy and dedicated researchers. Admirable mission and vision.

Cons

If you read through the reviews thoroughly you will see a consistent message. RAN is the epitome of a toxic workplace. Aggression and bullying rule. The commitment to DEIJ is prioritized on paper and discussed often, but RAN is not inclusive or equitable. Metrics gathered annually through RAN staff surveys support this statement. Though RAN's mission is compelling and its strategy sound, if employer that this is a hostile work environment.

Thanks for taking the time to leave us a review, and I'm sorry this was your experience during your time at RAN. I'm not sure when you were last working with RAN, but I'm happy to report we've spent the last two years making great strides on racial justice and JEDI work, internal culture, staff engagement, and advancement/development, as well as creating mechanisms and practices that address toxic behaviors at any levels.
