The most rewarding workplace

Pros

The people are absolutely incredible. It is the smartest, most passionate, and kindhearted group of people I have ever encountered in a workplace. Everyone truly assumes best intent and cares about the mission. The work is meaningful. You have the opportunity to apply technical skills to transform the justice system at scale. The pay is competitive for a nonprofit. Hybrid workplace! The NYC and Oakland offices are lovely and welcoming, but you have the option to be a remote worker. There is ample room for growth. Your manager truly cares about your professional development goals and you are continuously challenged in a supportive and collaborative environment.

Cons

Working with government can be tough, but other than that I do not have any cons about Recidiviz. I recommend it as a place to work in the highest regard.

Emotionally Scarring, Toxic Environment

Pros

Despite the staff disproportionately being ex-Googlers or Stanford alum (seriously, look it up) who don’t know the first thing about working at a nonprofit, there are a handful of amazing, capable people working here for some reason.

Cons

With that being said, avoid this place like the plague—especially the Operations and Communications team. You will have to put up with pushy, unhelpful, low-EQ individuals and you will be miserable. I interviewed a whopping 7 times for my role and was still let go within a few months because they “realized” I wasn’t a good fit. In reality, they just needed to onboard somebody in time to coordinate their annual event, with no regard for my future and getting me set up for success at the organization. The way these people move is very slimy. The double standard here is real—the day-to-day of this place is much too fluid and chaotic (they relish in this) and people are expected to be more nimble than is reasonable, and yet they are extremely quick to fire somebody for not matching the job description 100%. As if they pay enough for anyone to put up with this behavior. Do yourself a favor and steer clear of this place. Plus, the benefits aren’t that great either.
