Owner Ruins it for Everyone

Pros

Terrific staff, genuinely nice people who are intelligent, kind, and hard-working. The work Red Privet does is meaningful in terms of consumer experience design; the only thing holding it back is the personality of the owner.

Cons

It boils down to one person. This individual is so inept at people skills that I'm shocked he's been able to last this long. In terms of motivating people, publicly humiliating and berating them along with creating a culture of fear is the fastest way to get people to run. I laugh at the 'empathetic approach' Red Privet claims to provide for health systems, yet the owner doesn't practice within the 4 walls of his company. This was easily the worst working experience I've ever had in my life, and I'd caution anyone considering working here to seriously evaluate the effect Red Privet employment may have on their life.

Toxic

Pros

The project work was exciting. Upper management really stuck to their values when it came to the type of work and the process of doing the work (this is hard to do in the UX industry). The people there, besides the owner, are talented, fun, and overall awesome people. I made some life-long friends there.

Cons

The owner has a very bad temper that he unleashes on employees and clients alike. I saw a lot of client relationships fall apart because of him. This also led to an internal fear about the pipeline of work coming in. There is a culture of mistrust, which makes it hard to collaborate on design. The design process, while evidence-based and thorough, would often beat ideas to death. Design reviews were brutal and often left people in tears. I would consider this a toxic workplace. It took time after leaving for me to learn how to trust the people I work with, to not expect to be yelled at by my superiors, and to trust my design abilities again.

Pros

You'll probably never meet a nicer, smarter, more engaged group of employees in your life. They care about their clients (and each other) and give it their all on every project. Plus, it's one of the best paying digital design firms in the area.

Cons

Upper-management can be oblivious/slow to respond to the frustration and confusion inflicted on employees by incompetent mid-managers.
