Pros

The location is a pro and the retirement benefits are good. And, many of the employees, not management, are pleasant to work with.

Cons

If I had to choose one word to describe Resources for the Future, it would be Chaotic. Everyone either leaves or is fired or is waiting to be fired. If you manage to make it through the latest purge, then you are likely to have your work changed so that you want to leave, thus saving RFF payments of unemployment compensation. If management can't figure out how to do something, they hire consultants, pay them big bucks to change everything and see if they get positive results. The paralysis of analysis. Then management clears out entire departments after bringing in new, overpaid leadership to fire everyone with no warning and no negative employment reviews. But that's alright, everyone is an employee at will. The organization is penny wise and pound foolish; totally management top heavy. The latest chaotic move, which occurred with absolutely no warning, has the organizational structure changed, yet again, in less than two years. If management wants to hire another V.P. , then they fire a couple of people so they have more money to hire an overpaid V.P. If you don't have a PhD. then look out, you are very expendable.

Morale poor and endless restructuring

Pros

It's an easygoing place to work and a great place to park yourself if you have a PhD in environmental economics. The workplace is pleasant enough and the location is very attractive near Dupont and Logan Circles. People tend to keep relaxed work hours and many of the folks are genuinely pleasant.

Cons

The management of the place has been schizophrenic. Complete overhauling and restructuring of the program structure twice in the span of two years -- without ever admitting it made huge mistakes in the redesigns -- and completely turning over the leadership and core staffing in Communications and Development, all while fundraising continues to suffer. Unsurprisingly morale is poor. The organization has no sense of its core mission: is it a DC think tank? an environmental economics department outside of a university? a wonky brainiac best friend to corporations that purport to care about the environment? perhaps a bit of all of the above? The management and senior leadership is secretive, opaque, and generates no trust and maintains no faith from the researchers and staff. There is no avenue for advancement for most personnel without a PhD in economics, and there is an unabashed First Class Citizen/Second Class Citizen division. A brand-new, baby Ph.D. will walk into the organization with more salary and prestige than a highly qualified masters-trained professional with decades of experience in the sector. To some extent that is like many think tanks -- there is the "think" and there is the "tank" -- but RFF skews more toward that dichotomy than most.

Competitive Non-Profit with Great Benefits

Pros

Benefits, Benefits, Benefits. One of the most robust vacation and sick leave packages offered in the area: Four weeks vacation and more than two and a half weeks sick PLUS three days family medical leave. Maternity/Paternity leave also offered at ten days per year. Retirement is funded based on your age and contributions range from five to fifteen percent. Yes, up to fifteen percent of your earnings are contributed on your behalf. Additionally, RFF subsidizes/pays toward your healthcare--and you can opt-out--take those employer contributions as a cash benefit. You won't find anyone offering benefits like this which is why it is THE selling point if you're looking for a complete package--and not solely focused on salary.

Cons

Salary, but as a non-profit 'green' job, you should expect this coming in to any non-profit in the Metro Region. The retirement contributions are age-driven and I'd prefer them to offer the same to all employees (the full fifteen percent) as this feels like an age discrimination thing--with the advantage being on those with more time spent on the planet.
