Institution in decline

Pros

It is a job where you get to interact with a lot of young people and some of those interactions can be very fulfilling.

Cons

No raises for the last 3 years, declining benefits (403b contribution dropped by 70% in Jul 2015), horrible systems, dated management philosophies and expectations that you do even more work (over normal working hours) for less pay and benefits. I'm sure more people would complain about the things that go on at Rider (and the things long term employees get away with) but the HR office is feckless and seemingly completely engaged in protecting the university versus protecting the worker.

Once a great place to work...

Pros

Excellent faculty and the school provides a worthwhile education. Tuition rates are competitive for students. Excellent tuition remission program for eligible employees and their families.

Cons

The school is in financial turmoil....has been for several years. The impact on employees has been significant - cuts to benefits, salaries, hiring freezes. Top administrators make high six figure salaries while under performing. Not a great place to work.

Sr. Business Analyst - IT

Pros

The people in the "trenches" work hard, are friendly and, for the most part, are supportive of each other. Student workers are a nice addition to the area. Pleasant campus surroundings.

Cons

Extremely low morale in the IT department -- especially where the Business Analysts reside. The staff turnover rate in that area is EXTREMELY high. Roles are poorly defined and change daily based on poor communication and planning. Not much is documented. Managers, directors and above communicate most information verbally and do so inconsistently, often too late and sometimes not at all. Directors in the business analyst area seriously lack the necessary people and project management skills to lead an effective team. They are quick to blame their staff or other departments when issues arise rather than looking at and addressing the true root cause – their ineffective leadership. Talented, skilled, hard-working, honest employees are not valued in the area. Certain directors are quick to lie and have even admitted doing so to their staff. HR is fully aware of the problems in the area, but do nothing to assist the employees. Instead, it appears HR assists the management team with trying to cover up the dysfunction.
