Layoff Happy Company

Pros

Great people. Fun location. Top notch localized SEO product. Smart people (not necessarily management) working in various fields. Good place to work short term while you look for something better. Nice office.

Cons

1. Lay off happy - 2014, saw 3 rounds of lay offs. Not just one or two people each round, but dozens. If you have a mortgage, high bills, or a family this is probably not the place for you. There is a real lack of job security 2. Rio SEO's parent company Covario was bought out by a holdings company. Only thing is, this billion dollar company didn't buy Rio. The fact they were not acquired leaves something to be desired. 3. Company is under 50 people. At one point I'm sure it was over 50, but people get the ax by the dozen here. 4. With all the layoffs, workers tend to get overworked and burnt out. Thus they look for new jobs (while at work) and then leave. Vicious cycle really. I wouldn't say it's a high turnover rate, but it is definitely an unhealthy one. 5. Real lack of growth. Small company and upper management is not letting go of their titles. Since company is a one trick pony, it's hard to grow in other areas to expand. Work for Covario (iProspect). You will get paid better and have job security.

Pros

Good place to learn everything you shouldn't be doing. Pay was decent depending on what you do.

Cons

Anything you can think of. Outdated, just plain bad technology. Horrible HR. Poor communication at every level. Management would punch their own mom in the face for a $. Unethical business practices.

Pros

The culture with other employees is fun and there really is a sense of camaraderie, however, that does not transcend to management. The company is flexible about work hours and that is really nice when you need it but other than that there is nothing good to say about this company.

Cons

They get you with the "no one is a micromanager and the company culture is second to none", but that isnt' true. I can only speak for the manager I had, but, it is worth mentioning that before the current manager of the local listings team we had 6 other managers in a span of 18 months. She is constantly and unnecessarily attaching herself to other projects that have nothing to do with her actual team. She insists that the team she manages is her priority but knowing everything that she can about other teams and what they are working on is her main concern always to the detriment of her team members. When trying to address any of these issues with her, she becomes very defensive and the fear of repurcussions is very real. If she doesn't like you, you know it, everyone knows it and it shows in the way she treats you infront of the company and how she talks about you behind your back to other employees. When I was let go, I was not even given the courtesy of being looked in the eye by my manager and given a reason as to why, which was frustrating because I had been with the company for so long. Fast forward a week and current employees who are my friends and on different teams tell me what she has been saying as to why I am no longer with the company. This is so unbelievably unprofessional and to be completely honest the things she said were untrue. More to point, never discussed with me. I was not written up once. Additionally, the company's HR representative is generally clueless. I had mentioned 6+ months ago in a meeting I requested with my HR rep that I felt like my manager was bullying me and purposefully allienating me from the team and that multiple coworkers on different teams had mentioned it to me because it was obvious to them. Her response? They are harrassing you and they shouldn't be harrassing you like that. I was speechless, what HR rep responds like that? It is very concerning to me that this company doesn't work to protect their employees. When I brought this up again in my exit interview- I got the same response. Career paths and career development are also not a thing here. If you want to be in the same role making way below market price for said position then absolutely apply and work here. If you want to learn and grow and have a competitive salary then don't, I implore you, don't work here. All in all there are shady things that are always happening, the company is terrible with transparency and communication is a low priority. The HR rep even acknowleged this in my exit interview. All in all I wish things would have ended differently and that things were handled respectfully but I am not surprised that they weren't. I hope whoever is thinking about applying/accepting an offer here, hears these words. Take it from someone who learned the hard way- this place isn't worth it and you should take your talents somewhere where they will be appreciated and you will be compensated competitively.

Rio SEO Response

First, thank you for sharing your experience and your perspective on working for Rio SEO. While it is not the feedback we aspire to receive, the feedback provides necessary introspection and reflection. As a growing company, our structure and service offerings have been expanding to accommodate the fast growth. With changes come changing expectations and new demands for various roles due to the expansion of services offered and due to the growth of our customer base. However, the company does not make these decisions lightly, and we deeply regret if any of our former employees leave feeling unappreciated and/or mismanaged. We value open communication and a collaborative work environment and strive to foster this type of environment. Your experience tells us we did not meet our expectations, and for that, we are sorry we let you down. Please reach out if you would like to discuss your experience further as we are willing to listen and help where we are able.
