Pros

I will give them the benefit of the doubt that they had nothing but the best intentions when selling me the Brooklyn bridge

Cons

A software oriented company that has absolutely no idea how to build software. A 25 year old company that still considers itself a start up. Let's b-list contractors build the new software and then brings in a-list developers to sort through the ashes and take the blame. So much time is spent in crisis management that nothing else ever gets accomplished. Revolving door for most. I saw people who drank the Kool aid for years finally quit after a decade of doing the same job with no hope for advancement. And unbelievably I hear it has gotten worse since I left. The one C-level exec who was always honest, level headed, a listener and one who had your back has left.

From our CIO, Dan Trahan: It’s unfortunate that you weren’t able to recognize the opportunities the Sr. Software Developer position provides. Our team is open to ideas, and translating ideas into technical design and prototypes is what we look for in Sr. Development Engineers. We fully recognize that we aren’t in a start-up mode. In fact, after years of explosive growth, many of the systems that were developed early on are now being completely overhauled. That can be a painful process, yet we’re confident that we’ll end up with much better IT solutions that will fuel our continued growth. From our perspective, we’re building an incredible IT team. They have a passion for developing beautiful and elegant solutions. They love to share information, show others what they’ve accomplished, and can’t wait for the next challenge. We’re sorry you weren’t able to see it that way. BTW, we’re 17 years old--we just look like we’re 25 :-).

High Turnover, Poor Management

Pros

Work hours were flexible (work 6 am to 2:30 pm) Good training program

Cons

Poor upper management Micromanaged by middle management Company is against upgrades, process improvements They don't acknowledge when you succeed. No career advancement. Only spots for Lead positions open when someone quits. Turnover is absolutely crazy. In 2 years, I trained over 60+ people. They will hire anyone, even without a degree. They will not increase your pay even when you out perform the whole company. Culture is pitiful compared to larger companies.

Wasted Experience

Pros

The pros are largely macro-level. The CEO seems like a genuine guy who is excited and motivated to improve the health of healthcare. To that end, the company has a few large-scale plans devoted lowering medical costs that mimic Medicare’s efforts. Company culture is based around a set of core values that are designed to create an engaging and enjoyable atmosphere, and it is mildly successful. Careers in upper management or more specialized departments seem to have a good work atmosphere and outlook, or at least valuable training and experience. There are a good amount of special events where the CEO does something fun for the company, and they are always a good time.

Cons

If you are an entry- or low-level employee, you are better off looking for other work. The atmosphere of middle management on down is clique-ish and hostile. Wages are low and not at all competitive with the current healthcare workforce, and raises are even worse. This leads to unnecessarily high turnover among low-level employees, which sometimes felt intentional. In a span of 18 months I went through four supervisors with diminishing returns. Chances for cross-training are nonexistent and promotion opportunities are rare (that same 18 month period saw only one promotion opportunity). Because workers’ compensation is such a limited field, this lack of dynamic experience is understandable. Unfortunately, middle management is not only clique-ish, but openly hostile to those who they are not interested in keeping with the company. Human Resources (called Talent Management) are truly the worst aspect of the company, as they exist solely to protect middle management’s poor behavior and attitude. Overall, the majority of takeaways from working at Rising are negatives, which is not really worth the experience.
