Pros

With an administrative position in a fast paced, engineering company, I was afraid that my daily tasks and accomplishments would get looked at as menial, however my experience has been quite the opposite. Whenever I started at River Consulting, almost 2 years ago, I knew nothing about the industry. I love the fact that my coworkers are always willing to share their knowledge with me so that I can obtain a better understanding of who we are and what we do, and I'm proud to say that I've learned a lot over these past 2 years and only expect to learn more moving forward. With River, I've had the privilege of getting involved in many different areas of the company. Being involved with so many areas, departments and individuals allows me to never have a dull day at work and there is always something new that I may be working on at any time. An advantage of working anywhere is liking the people that you work with. At River, I've met individuals who I now consider friends. The work environment allows for team-building and collaboration, which is crucial when we spend most of our hours in the workplace. I consider River Consulting to be a great place to work. I've experienced growth opportunities in my short time here and hope to see where these opportunities may lead me in the future with River Consulting.

Cons

Communication across all levels of the company is not always clear, precise, and direct. That being said, I think that there will be communication issues at all companies due to management styles, communication styles, etc. In this area, I believe that the issues are recognized and we continuously make strives towards improving communication across all offices.

Pros

There are a lot of industry experts in the company. Most of the clients are large industrial facilities, and there are several different industries that you could work on projects in. As a mid-level engineer, I have been included in several client meetings and site visits, so the chance to be seen and get noticed is pretty good. The company encourages people to take on work that stretches you technically, so you learn pretty quick. Always seems to be a lot of work in the building. The offices and buildings are nicely done and modern. They share financial information about projects and the company as a whole with everybody in the company, which is nice. You feel like you are part of the team. There is a new owner in the last two years who I think is a big improvement over the former corporate owners.

Cons

Most days are pretty fast paced. It sometimes takes a lot of effort to keep up. Because there are so many different clients and industries, you don't always get to focus on your own personal niche.

Pros

Potential opportunities abound! At the engineering and design level there are people here with great skill and ability. The opportunity to touch a variety of industries and environments is all around. River makes its way to many different segments from manufacturing, petro chem, coal, nat gas, bulk material handling, etc... but that's where the excitement dissolves.

Cons

Setup up for failure at every turn! The professional project managers have all left, but when they were there they were brow beaten into accepting unrealistic schedules and overwhelmed with change management. The result of this is having people who have no business managing projects performing this very task. The twist here is that when these poorly executed projects are late or have significant faults, the blame is simply redirected to the engineers and or designers, not the project manager holding all the cards. Cases are built to demean the work staff, not develop. Accepting accepting responsibility and ownership means placing a target on your back. So if you're interested in taking pride for your work your also interested in taking blame for the project manager's failure to give you the information to do your job well. At River, if you're hired to fill a specific position, that doesn't mean that's what you're going to do. You're a warm body to fill a task, not build on you're profession or discipline. Success is measured by your ability to produce volume on schedule. It may seem that this review may come from my inability to achieve, I can recognize that. However, when the schedule is regularly developed around impractical work hours and vaguely defined scope, unless you plan on working undocumented hours (this happens way to frequently) then you are going to fail. Engineering about is about transposing knowledgeable and intelligible information into tangible evidence with some semblance of quality and understanding. We are about redlines and rework, back-pedaling and shooting the blame gun with unlimited ammunition. The real injustice here is that the responsible people have no shame, there is no accountability. River continues to make money, we continue to find clients, but in many cases, it becomes an adversarial relationship. They regret hiring us, we regret having done business with them. At the end of the day, you'll feel bad about the work you did now matter how good it was.
