Thanks for your honesty. You’re right that layoffs are a major downside of working at a company. We really wish that wasn’t such a common part of our industry or recent history, and we know how hard it is on everyone. Even though every employee is included in our annual visioning process, sounds like we need to do a better job of keeping an evolving direction from being mistaken as a lack of direction. We’d guess lots of people writing blog articles and “not much work” go hand-in-hand - and that’s never where we want the company to be.

Pros

Open Book Management. It lets you see how bad the business is doing financially.

Cons

Managing Director is a person who treats people poorly. She drives the "strategy" of the agency. They lay people off having a negative operating profit for almost a year and then hire the same positions months later. Very cliquey environment. They "gently" encourage you to write reviews for the best place to work through emails reinforcing the importance of good reviews.

We appreciate you taking the time to follow up with us, and are very sorry your perception/experience with the Managing Director has been poor. As she’s very receptive to feedback, we’d encourage you to approach her directly about this (sincerely). If this is too uncomfortable, we’d ask you to consider bringing it up to your Director, Operations or a co-founder in the interest of authentically resolving. Your advice and observations are something we take seriously. Even with open book, it’s difficult to make hiring and firing decisions that everyone aligns with in such an ever-changing environment.

Pros

Room 214 allows you to work from home when needed Time off is flexible Boulder Location Bring your dog

Cons

At Room 214 you will find a highly generalist advertising agency which has tried to identify a niche for years but takes whatever work comes in the door to this day. There is little management structure, no career growth and absolutely no accountability for poor management decisions. All of the blame at Room 214 flows down to the people who did the labor. Room 214 resembles a kids' playground where an inner "clique" decides who is laid off, who gets raises and who is important within the company. There is no business-related ethos behind those decisions as it's simply an in-crowd, more pronounced than any organization I've ever been a part of (professional or otherwise). Room 214 has laid off ~30% of their workforce in the past year. Those layoffs have been strictly to the "worker bees", where the middle and upper management have remained safe and sound. The balance between "workers" and "management" at this company is getting close to 50/50, which means 50% of the employees do 100% of the actual labor. The business model of a generalist agency is drying up, and Room 214 is a case-study of that.

Thank you for taking the time to follow up with your experience. It has been a challenging couple of years in the agency world in general - and you are right that we have been evolving to further establish our difference. As layoffs and compensation used to be decided exclusively by the co-founders, it sounds like our “inner clique” (i.e. leadership team) could benefit from helping others to feel more included. Agree that certain agency models are drying up - and we are hopeful the Room 214 case study will extend at least another 15 years. Couldn’t agree with you more in terms of looking in the mirror first when it comes to dealing with any kind of failure. As a clarification, half of those let go in the last year held manager or director-level positions. The company has never record an unprofitable year, but to all your points, we certainly have work to do.
