Pros

The relationships and time you spend with the youth is the best thing about this job. The ability to focus on your day to day duties and spend additional time at races or various events that benefit our youth, is also a great plus.

Cons

Leaderships inability to connect with the youth. Leaderships does not look like the youth they serve. Staff and Leadership refuse to take accountability for the lack of efforts/resources they put into the academic team.

Inspiring Program, Disappointing Leadership

Pros

Working with the program can be an incredible experience. The program-level staff and participants are the heart of the organization.

Cons

-Very high staff turnover, particularly people of color and people who work in programs. -Culturally and ethically divided working environment. -Leadership does not take feedback constructively. If staff go to HR or speak to their supervisors or executives with a concern, they will either be ignored or reprimanded at a later date. -Inconsistent and unproductive performance evaluation system. Supervisors can get negative feedback from their direct reports in their reviews with no accountability and still get salary increases, while programming staff get positive feedback with no salary increases. There have been at least 5 different performance review processes. -Executive-level staff severely deficient in cultural competence. Have heard multiple racist comments by executive-level staff and have reported it to HR with seemingly no repercussions. -Founder deflects accountability.

Pros

sports based youth development programs are high investment/high reward, RNY is no different. RNY does a good job putting its youth participants at the forefront. It is also an organization not afraid to pivot, try new things, grow.

Cons

NYC based non-profit work and coaching rowing are two professions that will not make anyone rich - this org combines them and will also not make you rich.
