Pros

Riverside location, architecturaly impressive building, prestige due to strong marketing

Cons

Terrible, data driven, micro management, who are sorely out of touch with the realities of teaching. Major changes are made to procedure with little to no training. Staff are expected to fill the holes in resources without extra pay. Curriculum does not reflect industry practices, ultimately leading to sub-standard graduates. Experimental methods which emphasize blogs and self reflection, over practice, leaving students confused and frustrated. Almost minimum wage pay, with numerous HR issues regarding processing leave. No flexibility. A toxic culture that demands no less than your blood sweat and tears, but gives little in return.

Management ground down the people and talent in pursuit of the almighty dollar

Pros

The people (no longer valid), the unique education area that is generally more interesting and creative.

Cons

Communication between management and employees is woeful. Us vs them mentality in most areas but mostly between management and everyone else. Pay is right on minimum wage and they use creative accounting to squeeze more hours out of everyone. Vague confusing contracts that are very difficult to decipher without someone who is experienced. I received two pay increases over 10 years while management took biyearly management retreats that bought zero benefits to the campus. In one instance a staff teamwork award was never paid out to the staff and was kept by management. Executive team is mostly white men. Creative industries are close to 50/50 parity resulting in some weird discrepancies in leadership and decision making methods. No connection to key industries and no support to build those connections to support current staff and current and alumni students. Becoming woefully behind the industry

Pros

Working with some of the most dedicated educators in the country, committed to ensuring the best *possible* level of instruction in media arts. Company also provides regular professional training as part of job remit.

Cons

Hard work is rewarded only with more work. Staff are badly over-worked, students badly under-served; especially those from overseas. The syllabus material is regularly rushed, late and/or incomplete. Onus for this, as well as miles of red tape, is placed entirely upon staff. Certain specific aspects of SAE's official internal policy actually contravene the National Employment Standard, yet so far as I am aware remain unchanged. In my opinion, SAE's management are as a matter of policy committed to keeping costs low and staff silent. A pervasive atmosphere of mistrust keeps staff afraid for their jobs; and HR are not there to help.
