Great vision, poor management

Pros

Great vision of providing the Bible to those languages that don't have them. Most staff are extremely committed to this goal.

Cons

Management are untrained in management, and full of unrealistic ideas. Very little teamwork. There is no project management of language projects and the only the language projects that are going well get any management support. Those that start going south will get less support and the language team hung out to dry.

Pros

People who work at SIL are world-changers since SIL is reaching around the world affecting millions of people who speak the world's minority languages. For those who have a strong commitment to the work and values of SIL, being part of the team is fulfilling, regardless of your role.

Cons

SIL is a non-profit organization and most people who work there are "members", and as such are required to raise their own salary by developing a partnership team. This funding model can be challenging to some.

Pros

SIL is a "family" organization. The organization believes God comes first, then family and finally your job. There were different fringe benefits: flexibility, access to the Boutique, ability to work remotely, etc. Opposite from Corporate, the organization heavily believed in praising/worshipping God whenever, wherever! The dedication of staff is phenomenal. The average staff person has been a part of the organization since they were 18. 60% of the workforce will retire within the next 10-15 years as a result.

Cons

The cons of SIL are minimal. The main one is salary. As SIL is a non-profit, salary is not as competitive as the profit industry. Another con is many people are not eager to trust 'outsiders'. You're an Outsider if you're not a missionary nor grew up in that world.
