Pros

Principal has a good eye for streamlining design, but not stacking bathrooms. He goes after what looks cool, architect has zero concern for craft. -Paid half of health insurance premium, but that's when he had an HR working there. She left after 3 weeks because of cons below.

Cons

-Principal is erratic, egotistical, arrogant, and never around the office. -He expects cool design without any of the practicalities of, for example, gravity/reality of architectural details. -He employs sensible people because he is not an architect, and will argue with you why (literally) there needs to be columns. He's a rich guy who went to grad school then hires architects for him. -He will bargain you down to your minimum salary, way below market, because he wants a good deal. Meanwhile, he charges pretty good rates to the clients anyway. -Again, he only cares about looking good. If you're a smart woman, you will argue with him for no reason other than he is intimidated and doesn't know it. -Has no interest in becoming a better company by industry standards. Will do autocad and rhino for as long as possible. Takes all he can from the company, as employees are only there to serve him and his image.

Pros

Too much to do. Staff is overwhelmed.

Cons

The boss can’t make up his mind, and is ultimately only concerned with himself. He’s a Bjark Ingels wannabe who will make you work an 18 hour day, then throw you under the bus to impress a client. Everyone who has worked here either stays for years because they’re afraid to leave, or stays under a year because they realize they need to get out. The boss is also forcing his employees to write positive Glassdoor reviews now. Don’t be fooled. This place is toxic.

The only toxic thing about our place is this poison running through our veins called DRIVE. I am always shocked when I read a review where the main complaint is the overload of work... Juniors simply dont understand sometimes what it means to work in the real world, in a firm where the main drive is to push the boundary. And yes I love Bjarke, almost as much as I hate him. Its true I look up to him, because he is a marketing genius, but we all love to hate him because he made it at such a young age, I mean he is barely 3-4 years older then I am, so we'll talk in 3-4 years to see where we stand. I really hope we'll get to his level. On a list of top 10 cutting-ege architects, he was number 2, I was number 9, so pretty close. As for forcing people to write Glassddroor reviews, who forced you dear? Seems to me you cant understand why so many many people have a great positive experience at SOMA, yet you failed at it, am I wrong? You should stop being scared by hard work. Life is hard, architects have the hardest job I can think of, in life. We are underpaid, under appreciated, at every level, even at the top. If you have to spend the whole night fixing your mistake and you chose not to, its only your character that is weak, not the firm's filters.

Pros

You will get a lot of experience because of the endless hours, but at what cost?

Cons

I cannot even tell you because the principal is insane and could try and figure out who I am and seek revenge. All I can say is DO NOT WORK HERE, especially if you're female.

I was once named the "most provocative architect in the history of the US" by a journalist. I am totally insane. I am the most insane architect in the world, because I want, pardon me, DEMAND excellence from myself first and foremost, from others who want to be part of the ride. SOMA is not for the weak, this was very well explained in the interview process. I mean look at the 180 projects we have produced in 10 years, in a boutique sized firm, what can one expect but a fast paced, high mode of production. Hours are endless if you dont know the basic skills yet chose, yes, chose free-willingly to come into our environment, and find yourself surrounded by IVY leaguers with hungry spirits that want simply MORE then just a job as an architect; people that want to build dreams and cities and environments, not bathrooms and kitchens. Anyway, we wish you the best of luck, we know exactly who you are (smiley) and the only revenge we seek is to make up for the lost opportunity for another worthier individual to have been part of the SOMA family, male or female makes no difference and you know that very well since you are a female yourself and were equally surrounded by all types individuals of both genders.
