Pros

- A team of mid and junior staff who really care about the business and its clients, and who work hard to make it succeed in the face of many obstacles. - Great if you're a contractor. You'll get paid more than anyone else, you'll have a good work/life balance and you won't have the job security issues that everyone else does. You're also likely to end up with an extended contract as the management can't estimate work properly and any project will run longer than they expected.

Cons

A lot of people have just left/handed their notice in and the prospects look bleak. - low pay in many teams - poor prospects... the company has already reached saturation in its key market and is struggling to find new opportunities. - Job risk - after struggling for cash and almost enforcing layoffs last year, it won't be too long before this happens again with the amount of customers leaving. I fear for the people that work here. - lack of coaching. People have worked hard and been promoted beyond their capabilities and now are seriously struggling to cope. - people stretched too thinly to do their jobs properly - very high turnover of people in key teams. If you can't keep your staff it says a lot about the business. If any more of the development team leave there won't be anyone to fix the app when it breaks! If it breaks we lose even more customers. - the CEO is particularly bad. He has very unrealistic expectations of what is achievable, especially when many of his "projects" are of little value and distract the team from their core responsibilities. He makes promises to customers that are impossible to keep, or simply doesn't tell the business about them, and then blames others when those promises aren't kept. He frequently dismisses the opinion of other senior leaders unless they agree with him. He contradicts himself all the time, is quick to blame others for his failings and equally quick to fire people that he just doesn't like. The business has succeeded so far in spite of him. It's only a matter of time.

Thanks for your feedback. We appreciate your honesty and understand how you feel. Everybody’s experience of their workplace is different. We are aware of the points you have raised and are working on them, and as a growing changing company we will learn as we go – sometimes we learn the hard way. We are very proud of what we’ve achieved as a company, and we are confident in our future growth. We are also very proud of the people who work here. It is a young and very driven team who have worked extremely hard to help Show My Homework to the position it’s in today. We want everyone to be here because they see opportunities for both themselves and the company. It was never the intention to make you feel like this and we will take care that others do not feel the same. Thank you for your hard work for Show My Homework, and we wish you every success in your new role.

Pros

- They're the only real players solving a very real challenge for everyone in schools - Young team who feel very close to each other. People stay there because their friends are there - Decent office

Cons

- Sub-industry salary (especially for junior team members who don't know any better) - CEO is an ex deputy head, and you can completely tell. He runs the place like a school. Literally has a register to check people are in on time. As a personality he is unpredictable, immature and aggressive. As a leader he's suffering from founders syndrome and finds things hard to let go of - Product strategy is haphazard - have diversified too early into Tutoring, but more bizarrely into something called FrontRow which seems to be trying to be a new youtube for schools - Sales leaders are like desperate car salesmen. They panic when their teams aren't making targets but don't give them proper support or training to improve. Sadly refer to team members as B and C team players. But if that's the case, you get what you pay for - Unable to keep senior team members - CTO, CMO, Head of Growth & Customer Success all left after challenging the CEO - Expansion into US was planned but they've partnered with a local hardware company. Have absolutely zero chance of winning a much more competitive market

Thanks for this feedback, and sorry we could not resolve some of these before you left. Like any start up we are learning as we go and our focus now is to listen to our employees. We recognise how hard they work and how valuable they are, and we have put in the means to measure engagement and accept feedback from everybody. Our senior team has grown over the last year and are focusing on growing employee satisfaction and engagement. We take your feedback on board and are actively working on everything here. I think if you speak to employees today they will tell you a different story.

Pros

Met some great people and it was a good place to work as a first job out of uni. I never worked past my hours and the office location in central London was a positive.

Cons

Most importantly, the CEO is wildly unprofessional and has zero experience in running a business before starting Satchel. Every attempt to improve staff wellbeing is performative and disingenuous at best. Long-standing members of staff are brainwashed and are used to the status quo. They are likely still there because they feed the egos of the executive team, by being obedient, and never challenging the toxic business practices in place. This is highlighted even further by the operations and sales directors describing things as “a bit gay”. Casual homophobia isn’t exactly common at Satchel, but it wasn’t a surprise. There is also no HR team to report these things to, probably by design. Often, the person you had to report issues to was your line manager, which is incredibly unhelpful if you have complaints about your line manager. The company values are used as a stick to beat you with. Members of staff are remunerated, by way of bonus, based on how they meet these values. One of these values is optimism, which puts anyone who may struggle with mental health issues in a position where they are paid less than colleagues with a sunny disposition. Opportunities for career progression are non-existent and there is literally zero scope for training or development. If you have any professional experience then I would avoid working for satchel at all costs. If you’re fresh out of uni and desperate for a job then apply, but make sure to be looking for better opportunities in the meantime. That being said, with fierce competition and appalling staff retention, satchel may well have closed its doors within the next year.

Hi there, Really sorry to hear your time at Satchel was not as positive as the majority of our staff experience. We always endeavour to create a fun and hardworking work environment where staff can take on responsibility, take pride in their work and ultimately grow as individuals during their time with us. We offer tools in which staff are able to share any issues they have via an online tool (officevibe) this feedback is anonymous and our executive team review the feedback left and endeavour to review practises in the business based off of this. Good news is we currently have a positive and improving NPS score from our staff, so the vast majority are telling us they are happy in their roles and with the direction of the business. As a reminder our company values are Pioneering / Be the best / Warmth / Integrity. So not sure if you have confused us with another company as optimism isn’t one of them. Staff who excel at Satchel are typically hard working (will sometimes work more than just 9-5), friendly, motivated individuals, who would like to make a difference to education across the world. We wish you every success in your next endeavour and hope you find a better fit in your next role.
