White Supremacy Culture

Pros

The programs team is a dedicated group of individuals who care deeply about the students and their families. Pay is incomparable; however pay equity still exist

Cons

The people in power are exactly that, people in power who hoard power over their employees. The people in power are not open to change and function out of a “we have done it this way” or they know what’s best mentality. The senior director of programs is not capable of doing program strategy work as they have no clue as to what is going on. People were promoted because of loyalty to the former Executive Director and people of color in positions of power perpetuate white supremacy culture as long as their pockets are full. Front line staff have provided meaningful feedback to either be pushed out of the organization or gaslit and made to believe they’re the problem. When the pandemic hit, the people in power still wanted to move forward as normal and despite the number of concerns raised, still did what was best for the funders. With that, funders have the first say on how things move forward. The former ED created a culture that is toxic and disguised the toxic culture under toxic persons of color who further perpetuate the cycle of oppression. The people in power here are performative and by no means capable of doing intentional and groundbreaking work. In fact, the people in power do not have a clue on how to create KPIs or program goals. If you want to perpetuate WSC then this is the place for you! If you’re complicit, then this is the right fit for you.

Pros

-The programs team deeply care about the mission and the students they support. Despite the constant management and programmatic changes, the high school and college direct-service staff provide unwavering dedication and mentorship to support first-generation college students persist through graduation. -Generous vacation time and flexible work from home option -Hiring for new executive director could potentially change work culture

Cons

-There is a toxic culture that prevents collaboration and feedback. Leadership is cliquey - it's always an "us versus them" narrative being played out. No accountability is taken by the people at the top. Program staff who voice out constructive feedback are scapegoated, silenced and gaslighted. It's dissappointing because the needs of students are not prioritited. With rapid change manangement and frequent turnover, leadership and human resources are not being transparent with what is really going on. Directors who have connections to the board, are highly favored and given preferential treament and promoted without proper protocol.
