Pros

The people are mostly friendly and the projects are interesting.

Cons

Extremely top heavy. The place is full of senior folks who will just burn time with theoretical discussions. By this I mean in the two years I've worked here I've been in meetings that went hours over, and on days I was in meetings, I was in 8-9 hours straight just listening to people talk about info that was entirely not relevant to the purpose of the meeting. HR and benefits are from the 16th century. They still use a paper application and they lag behind most companies. The benefits are lukewarm compared to other defense companies this size and don't even compare to larger ones. The hiring process can take months and months and I know a few people who were kept on the hook for months "just to be sure" they wanted. Some areas are extremely like a clique and there are some principals who are outright rude and toxic and are coddled by their leadership. When I left I was screamed at by my principal. The company won't do anything about it because "he is a good performer" technically.

Pros

- Flexible remote work policy - Peers are generally kind to one another

Cons

- Too many managers, directors, and business leaders means the focus is always on finding new work and never on actually delivering a good product - Some positions have the title "Technical Lead" but most Technical Leads do all they can to avoid contributing in any way to technical work - Extremely disorganized and fragmented teams. It feels more like you're working as an independent contractor than as a full-time employee at an established organization - Very misleading in the type of work the company claims to do. A lot of the work they claim credit for is actually performed by subcontractors. In the vast majority of programs, SSCI simply acts as a middleman for companies doing the real innovation - Project leaders cycle between extreme micromanagement and complete abandonment of their project team - Executives seem to spend most of the day reading news articles and surfing through LinkedIn
