Pros

Free food, (sometimes) Place to live in the Florida keys (bad room setup but still a place) Certifications Boat rides to reefs and the captains (some of the captains at least) The kids (sometimes)

Cons

All of the above reviews with 1 star are true, if you see a review with 5 stars it was probably an upper level employee trying to make this place look good. I worked the fall and spring seasons at Florida seacamp. I could say what happens here, but I would be reiterating all of the above statements from bad reviews, but I'll try to put in something new. Management treats you like an object to get the money from the kids parents, which is a lot (minimum $500 per person, and there are a lot of campers). Seacamp will indeed teach you what you need too know to get through lessons, but it's more of a crank them through the lesson at a fast pace. The only staff that enjoy it here are the ones that are socially awkward with their peers and are good kid people. This is not a bad thing but sometimes even they get over this place. The entire situation just creates a lot of stress on you and you will not be appreciated enough for it. As for the pay thing, while you struggle to make what may add up to a moderate 4 figure salary a year, some higher management make very generous 6 figure salaries (and you will be asking "what do they even do?") with the head honcho of the entire establishment rumored to be taking up 3 of the top jobs that pay the highest and earning near 7 figures and not doing a thing as far as you can tell. This entire place will let you know subtlety that you are expendable but that you will work hard because you are one of the few staff there. Oh and another thing that I feel wasn't mentioned, if you come on as a intern or even possibly an instructor, if you don't do all your homework or paperwork on your ever so limited free time they will withhold your pay because of some contract you didn't sign but agreed to verbally. The camp also receives foreign exchange students from other countries for 3 or so months and did not hesitate to overstep the boundaries it had setup for them in its contract as they will do with you. The students were only supposed to do office work and some house keeping jobs. The list of jobs at the end of their time included baby sitting, kitchen assistant (more on that later), painting not only buildings on campus but the head honchos personal home and cleaning it as well, ground work, minimal front office work and a ridiculous amount of cleaning. Eventually when these exchange students left( and they were happy when they did) the staff took over these tasks... Yay Back on the kitchen assistant situation the the exchange students had to do, that only reason they had to do it was because they fired the previous kitchen staff after they complained about seacamp not paying them for one of the months they worked. And Seacamp will guilt trip you if you decide to leave by reminding you how the very cheap certifications cost them (SCUBA certs aren't available in the fall a spring) Point is Seacamp does not have your back

Pros

I've been debating posting a review here for a while, as there's nothing I could add that hasn't already been said in previous reviews. But I saw that the only viewable review on this website was a positive one (which I strongly suspect was commissioned) and wanted to make sure a potential applicant doing a cursory search wouldn't be given the false impression that this is a satisfying work experience. My experience with Seacamp was horrendous and I would not wish it on anyone. Read previous reviews and weigh your options very, very carefully before accepting employment there. Pros. . . -live and work in a beautiful place -appalling work conditions and treatment of staff strengthen your relationships with coworkers -staggering turnover rates increase the chances of your getting promoted

Cons

Cons. . . - insane work hours (can be up to 70+ hrs) with no breaks -salaried wages mean this averages to about $2.50/hr. That seems illegal? -tough living conditions: no A/C, tiny kitchen, mandatory meals or on property nights, no on site laundry necessitating a huge time suck on your day off -very little time off (usually one day a week) is spent on laundry and professional development -as an environmental education center, makes no effort to change harmful and unsustainable practices -pretty terrible food; those trying to be healthy or meat-less have no hope, and when you're teaching there's no time to prepare or eat your own food -all of the above would be tolerable if it weren't for the way staff are seen/treated by mgmt. Blood, sweat, and tears are shed for Seacamp and program staff are treated like the dirt beneath mgmt's feet. Totally worthless, totally expendable, not worth common courtesy or human decency. Failure to complete homework is accompanied with threats of docking your pay. Any way you may try and negotiate your contract ends with the loss of a reference. If you happen to hurt leadership's personal feelings, they find a way to unjustly fire you. These are all real life examples I saw in my five months of working there, and the list goes on and on. There is something very wrong happening within Seacamp and its sad to see one person after another get abused and beaten down to the point where they feel like giving up on the science field entirely. Don't let Seacamp take that from you. Find another job. It's not worth it.

Pros

Getting rescues diver certified. Meeting and working with all my co-workers. Getting to go scuba diving for free in the Keys.

Cons

I have never work at a more unprofessional place. The management team was a total nightmare to work with and they literally treated their employees like slaves. I worked there during their summer camp program and have never worked harder at a job I hated. During our month of staff training, that we had before the campers arrived, (which they're so proud of and gloat about all the time) they taught us more about how not to get Seacamp sued than actually how to work as a good camp councilor. Seacamp puts more effort into covering their butts from lawsuits than they even come close to putting into making the camp an awesome time for campers to learn about the ocean and enjoy the Florida Keys. The education level of the marine science camp is sub par at best and it leaves tons of pressure on the science instructors that they hire and just throw into the positions with hardly any preparations. There's no wifi on property and the only way to access it is to spend your minimal time off sitting in a bar that has free wifi. I would have quit on my second day if I could have but unfortunately they trick us into a verbal contract that doesn't specifically spell out this: if you quit or get fired before your contract ends you have to pay Seacamp back for the money that they spent on certifying you in first aid, lifeguarding, rescue diver, ect. which adds up to be somewhere around $3000. When I only got paid $1450 for the entire summer working from 7am-11pm in the hot sun with no air conditioning everyday, I was not about to pay Seacamp for anything.
