Pros

While the salary is rather average, the other benefits (medical, RSU, ESPP, 401k) are actually fairly generous. There are some really great, highly-skilled people you get to work with. Maybe it's Stockholm Syndrome talking, but it's the good ones that make it possible to get through the day. As you'd expect for a West-coast company, the company is very focused on diversity and inclusion.

Cons

It's truly unfortunate at what cost the company's recent success has come. 5 years ago I would have happily recommended the organization to peers and prior colleagues. Now I feel a pang of guilt when we hire someone with great experience with a positive outlook because they will be broken within a year. The company takes their top performers, chews them up, spits them out, gives them no credit, and holds the door with a smile as they walk out to a better opportunity where they are respected. Prepare for some of the worst work-life balance you have experienced. It's a slap in the face because senior leadership stands in front of the employees, reviewing harsh survey feedback and say they encourage everyone to take time off, to maintain a healthy balance between work and home, and yet they set completely unrealistic expectations and deadlines such that if you dare to take any time off or fail to work 10-12 hours a day, nights and weekends you are going to be penalized. Taking even a single day off is stress-inducing because when you return to office your work life will be miserable. And good luck getting approval for additional headcount in your group! 5 years and counting with multiple new products, new processes, new systems, new responsibilities and nothing except longer and longer days. And with the extreme daily expectations comes overworked managers who don't even have time to spend with their direct reports, to coach them, to develop them, to recognize them for their successes, or to promote their careers. The promotion process is a ridiculous multi-month process full of painfully detailed essays, surveys from peers, managers fighting like gladiators in front of senior leadership to get unanimous approval of 12-20 other leaders, many who probably don't even know the person up for promotion, all of which you get to repeat if you happen to fail. Every quarter. For each of your employees. You can see the unhappiness in people's faces. Hear how tired they are from being overworked. And clearly see when their backs break and they are in the process of finding a less toxic environment to call home - away from Seagen - taking their talent with them. All completely avoidable if the organization cared.

Great science, lousy culture

Pros

Impressive scientific effort in advancing cures for cancer. Are able to quickly advance regulatory filings to get approvals in record time. Stock is doing well. Lots of free food. Have free yoga classes on site.

Cons

If you have experience working at other biopharma companies, you`ll be disappointed with the antiquated, inadequate, poorly thought out systems, operations and culture the company has in place. The majority of the staff seem to have not worked at other biopharma companies; most seem to have been here for 20 years. There`s a culture similar to that of a good-ol'-boy organization in certain departments. Middle management seems to have little training in how to be good leaders, how not to be micromanagers or how to treat people with respect. There seems to be a general lack of awareness and often knowledge of industry standards and regulatory expectations. These inadequacy's make it doubly difficult for newly hired, highly experienced staff.

Pros

The pay is good. This is my only pro, but there is a 5 word minimum so I'm added this sentence as filler.

Cons

There is a lot of politics and drama in every department. HR makes it impossible to transfer. Something they pride themselves on is hiring from within, but it's pretty evident that's not the case. New positions are given to external candidates more frequently then internal even if an internal candidate is more then qualified for the open position. There is also a clear favoritism towards individuals that speak the loudest and are the most brazen, if you are a conservative individual and just want to focus on your job this isn't the place to work. "Quiet" people constantly are overlooked. I have learned that being friends with upper management is the only way to advance at this company. Your work ethic has nothing to do with it. HR is a complete joke they are just as much into the favoritism and have shown an ineptitude to remain impartial. Bullies rule this company and HR is nothing but a figurehead. The only thing that has made me stay as long as I have was the money, but at some point when you come home and are completely drained from the constant harassment, inability to transfer, and lack of development opportunities you have to draw the line at some point.
