Pros

Self-help is a company that listens to its employees. There is space to bring legitimate concerns up and there are people who will advocate for change where change is needed to promote the company's overall success. You would be hard-pressed to find another organization anywhere that allowed employees to give pushback on established personnel policies and make adjustments to those policies instead of just ignoring the concerns and conducting business as usual. This demonstrates true compassion and an effort to understand the needs of those most essential to the work while at the same time balancing the challenges of making a business run efficiently.

Cons

Self-help is a successful non-profit that is growing exponentially faster than its current staff is capable of maintaining on their own without feeling overwhelmed, overworked, and underappreciated. Combined with growing pains are generational differences of opinion between the more senior members of upper management and the younger generation being hired to do the work at the ground level. The CEO is casting a vision and the workers are burnt out on the day-to-day of keeping up. The mismatch between personalities hired to do a job and not seeing the full vision, the vision being cast being too much for the staffing limitations, and hurt feelings from poor communication from the top down resulted in an exodus of good workers. The mission didn't stop moving forward. The employees that stayed, stayed for the mission- but are exhausted.

Pros

Self-Help is a credit union with a relentless focus on economic development and wealth-building in low- and middle-income communities. It is recognized nationally as an effective organization with financial strength and an impressive track record. The people who work there tend to be well educated and motivated by this mission. Among staff there is a lot of racial and ethnic diversity and a commitment to expanding opportunities for women and people of color. The working environment varies by function, but is very positive in most areas -- respectful and open to new ideas. For mission-driven, results-oriented people, this is a wonderful place to work. Benefits are quite good, with a generous matching program for retirement savings.

Cons

The pay is quite good for lower-wage workers, but professionals who work here generally aren't drawn by the salary. For someone mainly motivated by making big money, this would not be a good fit.
