Pros

I joined Sentinel Trust in 2014, and it quickly became the job I always wanted but never knew existed. I was introduced to the now-CEO at a transitional point in my career, and through her guidance and leadership, I have grown professionally and assumed a leadership role within the organization. No two of us arrive at Sentinel along the same path, and that diversity of experience and thought is one of the firm’s greatest strengths. Sentinel actively supports continued education and professional certifications, helping me and many of my colleagues deepen our expertise and grow in our careers. I am presented with complex problems on a regular basis that I do not always know the answer to, but I have a team of professionals I can rely on to collaborate, educate, and find solutions together. The collegiality here makes even the most challenging days rewarding. During my tenure, the firm has more than doubled its assets under management and client base. Increased focus on process, efficiency, and automation has helped Sentinel mature as an organization, while leadership today is more seasoned and intentional than ever. Turnover has been minimal in recent years—rare for a firm of our size in finance and banking. Some pruning was needed along the way, but that evolution has created new opportunities for leadership and development across the firm. The work is fast-paced and demands a high level of commitment, yet the firm values balance and well-being. Healthcare and benefits are strong, and despite significant premium increases in recent years, Sentinel has absorbed much of the additional cost to reduce the burden on employees. The firm rewards hard work, entrepreneurial thinking, and grit. Not everyone will find the pace a fit, but for those who value teamwork, growth, and balance, it is an exceptional place to build a career.

Cons

As a smaller, boutique firm, technology and resources are not as extensive as those of large banks. However, the firm is actively investing in advancing its platforms and capabilities. Because we serve clients in a broad, holistic manner, employees often wear many hats. This requires flexibility and frequent reprioritization, which can be challenging for those coming from larger or more structured organizations. It is a fast-paced environment, which may not suit everyone.

Pros

Sentinel Trust partners with exceptional families facing complex needs. Employees are curious, driven, and committed to excellence. Collaboration is a significant part of everything employees do, and individuals are surrounded by people who care deeply about clients and about each other. It’s a place where high performers thrive, where work truly matters, and where careers grow alongside talent and experience.

Cons

There is no con. This is a place for people who want to be challenged, who want to grow, and who want to have an impact

Toxic Leadership

Pros

Coworkers are supportive and understanding. They’re in the same boat, so at least no one is facing the chaos alone.

Cons

Working here is a bit like running a marathon blindfolded while someone yells at you from the sidelines and you’re not even sure there’s a finish line. The company hires smart, capable people, but once you’re in, communication breaks down fast. You’ll hear “we’re a family” often, but it’s less “family dinner” and more “family feud.” Clear direction is rare, and you’re often left guessing what leadership wants. The CFO, a longtime friend of the CEO, feels more like someone who wandered into an accountant’s office and decided to stay. Her responses are vague, lack depth, and are unhelpful, leaving teams to piece things together themselves. The CEO prefers to bark short commands and make remarks that come across as inappropriate instead of engaging in professional dialogue. Interactions with the GC often feel high-strung, adding to the charged atmosphere. On the surface, leadership promotes collaboration; behind the scenes, it feels like a steady diet of gossip, manipulation, and gaslighting. Decisions are made more on emotion than logic, with leadership reacting impulsively and often disproportionately. The constant charged atmosphere creates stress and instability, making the workplace feel toxic and unsustainable. While leadership claims to value an entrepreneurial mindset, the reality is you’re expected to stay in your lane, avoid rocking the boat, and never challenge the status quo. If you’re looking for a stable and healthy environment, respect, and to maintain your sanity, this isn’t the place to find it.
