Sinking Ship

Pros

Remote work was a thing here.

Cons

A long time ago, when I first started my career, I worked for a company that was delisted from the public market and acquired by a private equity firm. After the buyout, the top and bottom lines were squeezed. The company offered less and cost the customers more. Since then, I have been very fortunate to work for a number of successful up-and-coming companies that have gone public. Unfortunately working at Serato was not one of them. I think this company once was the bread and butter of the tech industry in New Zealand, but since then has fallen to the wayside as the owners have sold a controlling stake in the company. As a software engineer, and seeing how middle management ran this company, working here felt like a sinking ship. It had the same dismal dread as the company I worked at at the start of my career. If I were still at this company, I'd be cleaning off the resume, because it would be completely unsurprising if things get worse.

Pros

- Talented peers who genuinely care about their work. - Occasional opportunities to learn new skills.

Cons

On the surface the company markets itself as fun and supportive, but the reality is very different. Leadership is inconsistent, communication is poor, and employee wellbeing is not a priority. HR is more focused on protecting management than supporting staff. The culture feels draining, not empowering. - Poor leadership and communication. - Low regard for work–life balance. - HR does not act in employees’ interests.

Pros

If you miss the warm hum of Windows XP and the thrill of fax machines, you’ll feel right at home. Incredible career growth… in the art of pretending every idea from the boss is a gift from the gods.

Cons

Tech stack so fossilized it should be displayed behind velvet ropes. “Innovation” means adding a new column to the same decade-old database. Fresh ideas are treated like illegal substances, mention one and watch the veterans come at you with disappointed looks. Promotions appear to be awarded on a strict “How Loudly Can You Nod” scale. Most of the talent is preparing to leave, including me.
