Beautiful Place Terrible Leadership

Pros

The gardens are beautiful spring-fall.

Cons

The leadership is inept. They have driven the Museum to the ground and taken away the joy that used to be throughout the place. Prior to 2011, it was a fun place to be with family events, kids activities, and a team of individuals who enjoyed being on site. Visitors were excited about new exhibitions and would repeatedly return. Now, the place is closed for months at a time, there appears to be no interest in catering to anyone outside of the wealthy, and the staff are overwhelmed. Leadership systematically removed any long term employees either through forced retirement or false pretense. They have made a place with 39 buildings on 45 acres, including a carousel, train, and steamboat, BORING.

Pros

The job duties are consistent, yet varied You get to be outside You can listen to lots of music and podcasts while working Coworkers are helpful/nice You learn a lot of skills Great benefits

Cons

-Division of labor -Bad pay unless you have a degree and work in an office -I was the only consistent groundskeeper for 6 years and never got more than a few cent raise for inflation each year -Zero ability for cross-department or internal career growth (I applied internally for a job and didn't get an interview. Barely a response) -Director and board of trustees are out of touch -During Covid people that work office jobs at the Museum worked from home for a year and a half while groundskeepers, painters, carpenters, museum services, etc worked full time in person without any extra compensation or benefits the entire time.
