Pros

Good location in Toronto with subway + street car access, coffee shops and restaurants. Close to St Lawrence Market and Union.

Cons

The founders sets up expectations and rarely deliver. They are also transparent when it is convenient. You can be fired at any time it doesn't matter. No leadership in management.

Although this review is over 2 years old we want to address it to express what Shoelace is like now. The office location has changed but we still have access to all the great things you mentioned (Subway, restaurants, coffee shops)! Shoelace is a feedback forward company which allows employees/managers to express constructive feedback. The company prides itself on coaching and guiding employees to help them build their strengths and alleviate pain points to help individuals grow. I am sorry you had a bad experience and hope you have found a less confusing place to expand your career.

Pros

- If you are in one of the higher-up positions, you can do whatever you want and get away with whatever - Fun culture at a superficial level because free booze and food - Some well-connected angel investors

Cons

My experience working at Shoelace has scarred me. All of the negative reviews are completely spot-on. It is run by a small group of friends that do not care about your skills, how hard you work, or your dedication. They do not care to set you up for success unless you are one of the core group members (spots are all taken, btw). The moment one of them decides they don't like you, they leave you out of activities, ignore you, stop inviting you to lunch, and completely set you up to fail. It's easy to tell yourself you don't care about their opinion because this isn't high school, but it feels like high school there.. and it hurts. I have been sitting with these feelings for well over a year, and although I have moved on to bigger and better, I still think about my time there and how much it affected my confidence, mental health, and overall well being. The product itself is wrought with bugs and barely works behind the scenes, and once you realize it's just tinkering with Facebook with no real personal touch, attention, or effort, a company can easily do this by themselves. The C-suites win you over at the beginning. I remember in my interview, they said "we already love you. we just want to get you to love us". But all that positivity and care soon disappears and you realize they're barely ever around (which is abnormal of a company that size) and they truly don't care about you at all. However, if you are a young, fresh, naive, attractive woman, the founders will ensure you receive plenty of (potentially unwanted) attention. They are slimy, misogynistic bros that never really grew up so they don't care if you have either. They seem to just be there for a good time and treat everything as a party. Their attempts to have actual meetings and scrums and roadmap discussions are phoney and baseless and immature. Truly surprised to see this company is still up and running. It feels like the clock is ticking and the party will wrap up soon.

Thanks for your insightful review, there are many things to be addressed and I would encourage you to reach out to willow@shoelace.com if you would like to talk directly. We are very proud of the diversity and inclusion efforts of the team and having recently conducted company wide performance reviews, I can confirm that nothing close to this sentiment has been shared with us. With that being said, I’d like to address a few points you’ve made. 1. Shoelace has implemented meaningful feedback strategies across all levels of the team to ensure that when management is unhappy with your work they have the platform to tell you in a constructive way. This feedback structure allows employees to give constructive feedback to their managers/leadership to ensure they are getting the coaching and support they need to succeed. 2. We’ve worked on new offerings and app improvements to add more value to our clients and create a more personal touch by moving away from a SaaS company to a tech-enabled service. 3. Shoelace’s C-levels, management, and leadership have been working very hard to create a work-forward company. We agree that there was too much emphasis on social aspects of Shoelace, and while we are surprised that this drew so much ire from you, we are happy with the new process driven meetings, research and feedback based decisions, and that more transparency into the company allows for more accountability. 4. We have implemented lots of feedback structures into the company culture including regular 1:1s, bi-yearly performance reviews, and exit interviews. Because it can be hard/scary to come forward about mistreatment to the person doing the mistreating, the team knows they can always approach HR with concerns and we conduct anonymous surveys/Q&As so employees can give honest feedback and ask questions. 5. I would encourage you to reach out to willow@shoelace.com if you ever experienced/witnessed any inappropriate behaviour towards the women/individuals in the office as this is a matter we take gravely seriously. Again, thank you for bringing these issues to light, I hope your new role provides a better experience than Shoelace was able to.

Pros

- Lots of hard working team members - If your morals are low enough to take free food as as substitute for vengeful leadership, a terrible "product", and the biggest regret you'll look back at in your career then this is exactly the place for you!

Cons

- Incompetent management that tries to assert its dominance every time it feels threatened: even if we all know it comes from a place of fear and insecurity, this isn't excusable let alone professional. Undeveloped leadership skills (especially from a laughable and failed ex-management consultant) results precisely in micromanagement and an insufferable work culture. - Should you dare disagree with anything they say at any time, they will find a way to fire you to save their ego. They'll make up a story to cover their behinds the next morning and try to convince themselves they've succeeded in solidifying group-think amongst their cattle. Seen it happen way to many times to too many people. Conversely, this happens to also be the exact reason why all of this company's top talent from pretty much every department (product, engineering, sales, marketing, CS) have already left ages ago on their own accord. - Salaries under industry standard across all departments. So disgustingly slimey they wouldn't honour contracts terms for performance reviews yet happily shells out tons of money for failed commercials, catered meals, and other superbly material things. *chef's kiss* - Let's talk more specifically about the product though in case you're not fully convinced yet. The CEO's woeful bout of Napoleon Complex has led to a do-as-I-say product direction that lacks anything important like, hmm let's say some small little things like data, validation, research, testing. He's not the messiah we know he'd like to us all to believe, or else this 5 year-old "start-up" would already be profitable. - Be smart about where you spend your time and talent. Avoid at all costs and don't repeat our mistakes. Everyone's waiting for the right time to get out of this s[t]inking ship: don't get in.

This is very unfortunate to read, we really appreciate your review and would like to address the various concerns you have laid out. In the meantime, please feel free to reach out to your HR member so we can work on making Shoelace a more supportive and enjoyable place for you to work. 1. In regards to management, they have been taking many steps to become a more approachable management team. This includes making a number of key, experienced hires or promotions to improve communication and provide more bandwidth. In addition, we’ve engaged external HR consultants to take steps to work towards change. Managers encourage/expect feedback of this nature from their direct reports to be able to work on solutions. I can understand how this feedback would be hard to share 1:1, but I hope you will feel empowered to express this to a member of the leadership team you are comfortable with so this can get resolved. 2. Without going into detail about terminations, they are always unpleasant and at times can be unexpected, however Shoelace has taken big strides towards feedback and when a member is struggling they are given warnings (both written and verbal), guidance, and coaching on ways to improve to avoid termination. Regular 1:1s are used as a weekly/bi-weekly check in to help employees and managers align on expectations, provide constructive feedback, and develop regular coaching. We encourage all employees to address any ill feelings with your manager during 1:1s, HR, or a member of the leadership team you are comfortable speaking with. 3. Salaries are compared to industry standards twice a year and corrected based on performance, market adjustments, and inflation. Our last full market salary comparison was done in late 2019 by an outside HR consultant and moving forward (including this current review cycle) managers will additionally conduct their own market research for each performance review to give recommendations on salary corrections and raises. 4. With our latest product idea, the CEO and Product Designer conducted many hours of market research into helping form a new product that people have expressed a need/want for. With our most recent product offerings (including prospecting and add-ons) we saw a lot of success due to the needs of the clients and the knowledge that these were offerings they were interested in. Shoelace takes concrete steps on ensuring our product ideas have market fit.
