Established non-profit running like a 1st year start up
Pros
Mission is people-centered Student culture is strong Team members are willing to jump in to support anyone at any time Great benefits package: employer covers medical/ dental/ disability; unlimited PTO; 3% compensation match for 403B
Cons
Lack of strategic planning or operations Board is hands off and doesn't hold management accountable Upper-level management is inconsistent with expectations, organizational goals, and support. Their ideas and direction change with the wind and everyone else is left to pick up the pieces because "we're family" Upper-level management asserts complete control and doesn't trust middle management to handle things Lots of grey areas pertaining to job responsibilities as far as which team should handle what Favoritism is evident and influences all interactions: big and small Very little structure No staff development or investment Leadership decisions often favor numbers over quality outcomes Decisions and plans are often kept quiet and only communicated sporadically with individual parties rather than addressed with all the relevant parties together Unlimited PTO policy includes politics on who gets how much approved with unspoken expectation that you are still available Leaders brag about and glorify others overworking and burning out
