Cons

Hi! I am a former driver for the Fargo satellite location. What I share with you here are both my personal experiences and my opinions. Potential Candidates, be cautions when applying for this position. 14+hr days No workers advocates Poor communication Consistent last minute preparation Sales reps are prioritized over drivers Work apps glitch frequently Work devices glitch frequently Inventory always out of balance Zero opportunity for advancement, unless you are part of the family that owns the company. Very double standards for reps vs drivers. As a former driver for the Fargo branch, in my opinion, I was never treated with the same level of respect as the sales reps. If I needed anything, I would be “Yes’d.” To death then never received what I asked for. If a sales rep needed something it had to be done right there and then! Didn’t matter if I just started the day or was already on the road! It was always demanded of me to drop everything for them per management. Very poor communication. I was always informed of orders last minute. Never knowing what the following day would hold and often times not knowing about “Add Ons” that would have to be picked and loaded AFTER I’ve already loaded. In my opinion all decisions were made in the heat of the moment and management expects their drivers to comply or else. No accountability. Sometimes you’re wrong. What you do with that either makes you a good guy or a bad guy. In my experience, management never takes accountability for their mistakes, and those mistakes happen daily and I was expected to clean it up. Imagine being on the road starting your day when you’re 40mins away from the warehouse when you get a phone call from management telling you, you have to drop everything and go back because one invoice/order was not emailed to you and you knew nothing about it because there are no checks and balances. This happened to me multiple times! There is no communication and if management makes a huge mistake, I the driver always had to be the one to apologize for their mistakes. This is not the rants of a disgruntled employee. Truth be told, I LOVED my job. But I did not like the people I worked for. I was the sole driver for the entire state of North Dakota and the entire Western half of Minnesota. I love to drive and I really loved working with most of our clients. Got to see some beautiful scenery in both states and learn cool history from the locals. Visited many beautiful lake front restaurants. Like I said, I LOVED my job. But the owner and his managers will say, “Yes” to my face, then do the opposite of what they’ve promised me. In my experience, I’ve seen a rotation of people (drivers) last for 3-6months. Lastly, do not be fooled by comments like, “We’re working a new solution to solve AB&C.” It has consistently been my experience that said, “solutions” can take several months before they are implemented, if they are implemented at all!

Pros

The sales team, though spread across 4 states, is collaborative in its knowledge sharing and operates as a family. The portfolio has laser focus, selling only the top products for quality & value. Individual sales people have the ability to work their own schedule so long as it produces results. People are encouraged to be their true selves (not fit a company mold), and bring new ideas to the group. Commission structure is near the top of the industry. Management and Executive Leadership care about employee's personal growth and work-life balance. They also have a defined direction for the company and a well-thought plan to achieve goals.

Cons

As it relates to their industry and market, Small Lot is still a young company. Thus does not have a mature portfolio or account base. The company's rapid growth has caused hiccups in supply chain and strains in operations and systems. Having a lean management structure/philosophy, there is not a training protocol for employees who are new to the industry; they must then "find their way" with less direction than larger distributor sales people.
