Messy organization

Pros

Good-ish compensation package and benefits, there is work life balance

Cons

Majority of upper management is under qualified, some incompetent and amateurish. No hiring standards for managers and above, does not promote from within but most, if not all managers are lacklustre anyway with no applicable skills. No soft skills either. HR is extremely rude with no empathy. Hire and fire policy, high turnover recently but company refuses to change anything. Everyone is greedy to them. Organized town hall is useless from operations stand point, no credible information released to employees. Company does not care about retention rates. Be careful of HR. Flat structure but a complete mess, as with most start-ups. But Smartcow disguises itself as better than a start-up but it is not. Everything works like there is only 5 people. Official social media posts and press releases go out with zero vetting from copywriting experts. For a global company, it is very embarrassing. Ask PR team how the company name and logo came about and they literally have no answer for you. What does this company even mean and stand for? Nobody knows. No SDLC in place, there are engineering managers but how is it possible that there is no process or flow? Inadequacy is the reason. Documentation? None. The only good and reliable people are the actual engineers themselves. FYI: Every time there is a genuine negative review, a flood of positive reviews come in almost immediately. Please judge this how you will before joining this company. It is the same - everyone tries to hide everything and does not work on the root of the problem.

Toxic, tons of office politics.

Pros

Office is located in a convenient area. Some of the colleagues who are genuine are very nice to work with. Some countries have very good working environment.

Cons

Please rank the reviews by date, and you will see that for every negative review a few “good” reviews will pop up. Read them and make your own judgement whether these reviews are genuine or not. This company is the most toxic company I have ever been in. ———— The PR “team” is so unqualified, petty and unprofessional. Press releases and some marketing material are full of errors. Many of us who tried to help are blocked, and suddenly became adversaries. And not to mention that this PR “team” wants to be in control of everything. In front of the CEO, everything will be good, but behind his back, there are tons of manipulation by PR to bully her victims. PR is definitely not a good candidate to be partner facing representative for Smartcow, because the english is horrible & incomprehensible. HR is not localised but is based in India and they imposed policies which are standard within India, but unheard of in other countries. For instance, the employee referral bonus is a joke compare to other real technology companies. All feedback to the HR is basically falling on deaf ears, their aim isn’t to improve things, but to report about other employees to the CEO. HR is always coming up with shortsighted initiatives that nobody asked for, forcing everyone to be part of these useless endeavours. The HR favours some employees while has a personal dislike for others. The favouritism extends to poor hires that were kept in the company, but some good developers where forced to resign. HR puts up a facade that everything is well and flourishing in the company and is always sprouting grandiose ideal values like "what teamwork is" and "appreciation for each other" but outright ignoring the underlying toxicity in the company. In finding potential hires, HR did NOTHING to help. HR & the management never finds out why people quit or care about the high employee turn over. General feeling is that the managers in the company are afraid that any individual will outshine(when you genuinely want to improve things), so you would be blocked by some managers or deliberately not contacted for projects and decisions, or they would try to put you into “your place” by showing that they are the CEO’s favourites. Extreme polarising and biased treatment irregardless of your professional capabilities. It’s all about how good you are with a few key people in the company, and not about how good you are with your skill and how you can help the company. If you are good with office politics this might be a good company for you.

Toxic workplace

Pros

- Technical teams are bright people and know what they are doing - Can tell that some offices are well managed with good leaders who inspire and create great cultures - Competitive salary and package - Some of the folks here are brilliant and willing to go the extra mile

Cons

1. Unhealthy workplace CEO playing favourites is one of the biggest issue in this company, it leads to workplace politics, gossips, dramas and unnecessary jealousy every other day. Certain employees are treated differently based on the list of assumed favoured and unfavored people, making it hard for others to work professionally. Some are leveraging these power they hold and work starting to get personal. Just to list out a few examples of these unprofessional behaviours: - Some stakeholders were excluded or isolated in meetings and discussions when news is that this person has been moved to the CEO’s “cold storage” list - Work getting undermined, areas of responsibilities and communications were removed without cause, a waste of effort for the victim to try to understand the underlying problems because there is no such thing as constructive feedbacks in the company, while backstabs and sabotages are common practices - Disrespectful language and reaction are used in responses or one's opinions getting belittled, in contrast to other co-workers especially those in favour by the boss - Some are influencing other coworkers into similar behaviour As a result, people are encouraged to constantly judge the others from what they hear through the grapevine. To be fair, most of the people are pretty enthusiastic and worked hard for the betterment of the company in the beginning but after several rounds of rejections and unfair treatment, some are too drained and exhausted to commit. 2. Company direction is a lost cause Company’s direction is obscure, some goals were set but mostly too ambitious and not sustainable as there are more ad hoc decisions than strategic planning. This is not too much of a problem given that it is common in startups, as long as there is job security for employees. All product development are given unrealistic timelines and some employees are overworked due to this, while some are underworked because of the uneven team distribution or were instructed not to be involved, yet those who have work tirelessly might not be getting the recognition they deserve. No software development lifecycle in place, causing increased development time and cost, though some of the managers are trying to implement some processes but it is hard to sustain when it is not an organisational effort. 3. Non-existent company structure Information about the company profit and revenue is not entirely transparent. Financial updates was not part of the agenda during company-wide town hall hence unsure about company growth. Management is a chaos as most decisions are made rashly and not based on any planning or metrics. For example, hiring and firing are not discussed or planned and often time it is solely depending on the opinions of certain personnels. There are no KPIs for employees so for some of the victims who were asked to leave, reason of terminations are unjustifiable. Team members have to adapt to a new reporting lines without any notice in advance. There is no organisation structure and scope of work and chain of commands is unclear for most people in the company. 4. HR Manager HR manager has low empathy, more provoking than nurturing when it comes to employee retention strategies. Some current / former employees were badly affected by her actions.
