So much potential stifled by poor leadership

Pros

The team is really great, all very friendly and warm. Everyone cares about making the company successful. For the basic use cases, the product works really well and clients are very successful.

Cons

The technology is so poorly managed, no innovation has been released in nearly five years. The leadership has no idea how to run a technology or software company and high turn over in key positions means the company burns through investment capital without growing in valuation. Three straight years of closing funding and the company's value never changed. I'm not a venture capitalist, but that can't be good. The outlook is only looking more bleak as a huge portions of the company are leaving.

Engineering department is toxic

Pros

There used to be a lot of pros, but they have largely gone away. It used to be an amazing place to work but slowly, all the good people, processes, and attitudes that made it that way just died off.

Cons

The company has embraced several incredibly toxic people and has taken a weak stance against a growing toxic culture. The linchpin of the technology is a child in his mid-twenties that treats everyone horribly. I have seen this kid drive so many good people away and treat so many people like crap. The company RELIES on this kid. It's amazing. Him and another guy on the engineering team will routinely team up on certain employees and run them into the ground with baseless accusations and harassment. At least twice a week you have to endure an unhinged rant (usually about about politics) from one of these two people. There is a habit at the company of hiring and embracing people that have trouble getting jobs elsewhere while letting very good people get run out or even firing them for petty reasons. There is a lot of intellectual insecurity among this group. It's a very high-strung, out-of-touch, and snotty environment with the Austin group. New QA Management is woefully incompetent. Him and everyone else in engineering leadership have a laughably huge ego. The technology, and ultimately the company, are really just a side-project clamoring to be taken seriously. There is quite a bit of delusion keeping these guys afloat and they are consistently and grossly underperforming on their sales goals. The CEO has made numerous promises of becoming profitable in the near future while the horizon just creeps further and further away. They can't say no to investor money. Indy office seems like they are doing a little better, but the last thing you should do is waste your career in their engineering department. It's bad and getting worse. I was so happy to jump ship and work on technology that is actually in demand and work for a company that is taken seriously.

Pros

I head up recruiting currently at SmarterHQ as I have for the last several years and all I can say is that we have truly built a really awesome company culture - one I'm so proud of saying that I helped to build. We are so fortunate to have so many candidates every day so interested in joining the company, yet we are highly selective in who we bring in. The company values are centered around: integrity, collaboration, authenticity, transparency, respect and positivity. The leadership team is truly amazing from an experienced CEO leading the charge, with a Chief Data Scientist/Co-founder who is the #1 most influential data scientist in the world, to a VP of Client Services who has built a world-class Client Services team. We work hard to develop and nurture a culture based on those values and we focus on employee happiness. From time to time, as with any business that goes through cycles, we do have to trim here and there for those who don't value the hard work that is a part of our culture - there is nothing unusual about that at all. We have a world class data science and software dev team. Our interview process is designed to be a rigorous 2-way process - where we learn more about the candidates and we encourage them to learn more about us to ensure we have alignment not only with the expectations and experience required for the job but also a match with our shared values and vision. We do all kinds of volunteer and team building events. We're connected and integrated into the community. It is really a great place to work.

Cons

Can't think of any! I love SmarterHQ!
