Pros

Good cause, many highly committed people, excellent benefits, opportunities for travel (depending upon position), opportunities to learn about local and international labor issues

Cons

As with any organization, whether or not you will have a positive experience depends heavily upon the quirks of your department and its leadership. Failing to make the distinction between those who may have content-area expertise and those with the basic interpersonal skills (let alone leadership abilities) to manage a staff creates highly toxic working environments. While such environments are not present across the organization, they are present and any potential employee would be wise to stay alert to indications that the office they are considering is such an environment.

Pros

I was immediately given an opportunity to take on a project management role that I probably would not have gotten at another organization without another two years of experience.

Cons

I did not receive the support that was promised when I signed my contract and my contract signing process was pretty messed up. I was working at on a project for one of the country offices and they delayed signing my contract well into the start of my program/after I needed to make significant monitary investments to stay in the country to work on the project.

Thank you for your review. We're sorry to hear that you did not have a better experience. We are proud of our affiliation with the AFL-CIO and work to prevent and mitigate the occasional tensions and internal politics that spring up from time to time in any large global organization. We hope you'll continue to support the cause of worker rights.
