Pros

I worked with many wonderful people at SR. Hundreds that I consider friends.

Cons

I've waited a year since my departure to write this. There was a forty person layoff in 2015 or so. Dedicated and experienced employees. Not unusual if you are truly downsizing. But in the following months, over 100 people were hired. Not experienced. Why? In the faint hope that change will make a difference. One scientist commented that they had hired ten people to replace one employee. That's when things started getting sideways. Southern Research is known as a cancer research organization. They fired a cancer survivor for no apparent reason. Perhaps lower production after chemotherapy. Southern Research truly does not care about its employees. I made the mistake of taking on responsibility beyond the scope of my employment. I then became the scapegoat for everything from that point on. When it was about about salary or respect, I was treated as a peon. When it was about taking time off, I was treated as indispensable, More Chiefs than Braves. I'm sure the positive posts are posted by management through fake accounts. People who take courses to manage employees, simply lack the skills to do it naturally. These are to be avoided. All management gets bonuses. Regular employees have gotten nothing for years. Not even a coupon for a freakin' ham for Christmas. Hyland software scam. Expensive software that does not meet users basic requirements, but was purchased because the IT manager was “friendly” with the company. There were better and less expensive products available. A good way to ruin your career. Aging facilities, crumbling despite the efforts of the amazing maintenance dept.

Pros

Some of the smartest, hardest working, caring people I've ever worked with were at Southern when I arrived in 1998. They really cared about you when you were recruited to join the institute as a researcher, and wanted to see you succeed because it meant they succeeded.

Cons

They had several re-organizations, and then re-affiliated with UAB which led to major changes in management and mission due to competition from across the street. The SRI BOD was UAB focused, and they have systematically dismantled the once proud organization over the past almost 10 years. While I was consistently promoted, I left when it was clear that the decisions on what the labs would do were not being made at the lab level any longer. I miss the people there, and miss Birmingham as it was one of the nicest places I've ever lived.

Pros

Good benefits including 401k. That is about all that can be considered Pro. Beware of 401k loan though, because they are payroll deducted only and are due in full when they lay you off, and they will lay you off.

Cons

Low pay, very rare raises. New management has no clue what they are doing. Spending money left and right on unimportant things like courtyard furniture instead of investing in the people who have spent their lives working at a place they believed in. Laying off long-time employees and hiring in new ones cheaper but do not have any idea what to do. Management has no loyalty to employees who have worked 10, 15, 20 and sometimes 30+ years. Company now so top heavy they have to find people who already have money coming in with projects to work for them. Letting everything that built the company fade away and investing in new things that just are not going to work.
