Pros

They do try to create a family work environment. If you ever ask them for help they will be there for you and your family. I've worked here for years and you can tell that most of the people are good-hearted people, but everyone is mainly looking out for themselves.

Cons

Span is not a long-term career opportunity. Upper management makes all the support staff do most of the heavy lifting and working the long hours. It will be many years before you see any financial gains from working long hours and going the extra mile. Management will paint you a pretty picture when you're first interviewed/hired, but they will never follow through. I have figured out that they expect you to work here all your life, before you truly make any financial and beneficial advancement in the company. Once you've work here most of your career, they've strung you along so long that, it's like you feel stuck and don't know how to leave, because you've wasted so many years here. Unfortunately, it takes many years to reach a sense of accomplishment and appreciation at this company. Span is very understaffed and that is why they enable everyone to work long hours and on the weekends. They tell you that this is an opportunity to "wear multiple hats" and make yourself indispensable, but in reality it's just to get you to do the job of 2-3 people and pay you for 1. You will find yourself doing this for years and not see any financial incentives from it.

Pros

Very laid back environment and some staff members are very very helpful

Cons

Promotions are almost non-existent, funding is almost solely based on grants, supervisors are not competent in the slightest (watching netflix during all work hours, yes, all 8 hours, making sexual comments, and overall defending other co-workers because they are friends) You have no real grasp on what is happening with staff and they don't do much to help it out

Pros

Friendly colleagues and staff. Small town feel, not a high pressure, fast-paced, or stressful working environment.

Cons

The management is pretty tight-knit so opportunities for advancement and fringe benefits are rare to non-existent if you are not in management or the inner circle they have there. Management is well taken care of with a car allowance, a company credit card, a fuel card, and other fringe benefits. I think this created a company culture where the needs of management were prioritized over the non-management staff. For instance, while I was there I needed a new laptop so my manager gave me his old one and he ordered the new one for himself even though laptop use was much heavier in my position. The company culture drove this kind of behavior (management gets the best and newest). The vacation and sick leave benefits could have been better also. I would recommend the company as a good stepping stone to get some experience, but in time you will probably find that you need to move on if you want to advance your career, get a competitive salary, benefits, etc. It was a good stepping stone for me.
