Pros

Unfortunately, it took me some time to think of just one pro to working at this place. After thinking about it (for probably a little longer than I should) the only thing I could come up with are the people. With that being said, only a SELECT few people - and absolutely no one in management.

Cons

I worked here for a short time last year. The first week on the job, I knew it was a death wish. I always heard to wait around six months, then after that, if it's still not up your alley, to book out and find the next best thing. However, I didn't make it that far, which is really surprising. During the interview process, you are going to LOVE what you hear. They make Spotlight out to be the best company and question how you even landed meeting the CEO. But shortly after you're hired, you'll realize it was all a hoax. I wish I would have read the reviews before even applying. All of the ones that are one or two stars, are the ones that are true. The ones that are five stars (all written days apart - very suspicious) I believe are ones the current employees have been asked to write. And, to be honest, are all fake. No one working at that job genuinely enjoys the job. At times, I didn't even think the CEO did. It's just toxic. They fire employees just as fast as they hire them, and they "let go" employees to make room for new ones. The turnover rate is awful. The "growing" mindset they have will never come to fruition. Everyone will either leave before they get fired, or wait until the day comes that they get pulled into an office and hear they aren't valuable anymore. Math: they lose one, they add one. They are really never "growing." Oh, and micromanaging never ends. The second you think you've done a good job, a higher up will come and tell you otherwise. Furthermore, the higher up of THAT higher up will come and tell you otherwise, as well. It never ends. It's honestly an experience I could go on and on about, and I'm sure the people with the five star reviews would too, if they didn't fear the repercussions. You'll see once they're all "let go" those ratings will all quickly change.

Pros

Meeting great people in the community

Cons

You can't give feedback to management or voice your opinion - many people avoided this for fear of being talked down to, called dramatic/emotional, or just plain fired. I saw it happen to so many people unfortunately. Direct management to the editorial department only cares about checking stuff off a to-do list instead of actually putting quality work into anything or paying attention to any real problems. When employees do say something, most of the time it doesn't get passed on to higher management. Nothing ever gets solved, and nobody really listens. Management clearly just cares about how they look to the public. And all of the stuff about being innovative and moving forward/growing so far has just been talk and no real action from what I saw. And as far as a "family" environment goes, I could easily say the exact opposite. You can barely mutter a word out loud at your desk before you get in trouble and accused of not working hard enough. There's no positive company culture at all. Nobody encourages or practices positive feedback and activities, not to mention no positive help during stressful times. There's hardly any room for advancement, you just have to work there long enough for them to give you a decent raise for the amount of work that you actually do. The actual work itself doesn't suck, but be prepared to have no real guidance. If you give any feedback or voice an opinion/stand up for yourself, management will just tell you that you can't keep up with the pace of the company or blame it on untrue things such as your "lack of experience/first job out of college/you haven't worked at a real company, etc." There will be times they'll easily make you feel not good at your job or qualified, when some people in upper management are just as unqualified for their part.

Pros

They tend to show a positive face to the public.

Cons

But once you hear from past advertisers, employees, and people who aren't struggling desperately to keep it afloat, it's clear there's some real problems with the company starting from the top down. It's impossible to offer any constructive criticism because management has their noses stuck up and ears turned away. Their hiring process has some severe issues that are evident in the fact that they are a revolving door for employees. I read some reviews of the company prior to working there, and I'm sad to say they are nearly all true- but I had to learn the lesson myself. If you're looking for experience, do it with a company who cares about you and with whom you have a future beyond the next paycheck. The employees who really made a difference there moved on, showing there's ALWAYS a better place to work than Spotlight.
