Pros

Because it's government, you are given so much time off, that you can take off one day a week pretty much all year. Probably that isn't actually good for the long run.

Cons

-They try way way way too hard to make everyone say that everything is fine and everyone is happy. Tiptoeing over eggshells on a daily basis. -They do this stupid thing where you have to switch jobs with someone for a day, this is MANDATORY, while fundamentally this is a good thing at heart, what actually happens is departments "accrue" the nasty jobs that nobody wants to do and dumps that on you on your one switch day. -Complaints, complaints, complaints. You will get called in to explain complaints that were put in 6 months ago about you. Even if you prove the other person made it up or the complaint was unfounded, they don't get in trouble, so it's just a matter of time before everyone figures out to put in complaints about each other. -Get spammed on a daily basis with 20+ e-mails of people running "Trivia contests!" and you miss important e-mails -There's a lot of really old people who had nothing better to do than hold a receptionist job for 30 years, they basically have tenure, you want to steer clear of these people because they just try to get everyone except themselves fired -IT policies are a joke and oppressive to the point where I couldn't do my job -Software the library buys for the computer logins are buggy and you will get blamed for it -Library puts way way way too much time and energy into feel-good programs that only a couple of people attend and no time into the important bread and butter of the library. They don't want to admit that nobody comes to the library for books anymore, you go to the library if you are too poor to own a computer or yours is broken -The director of IT died from covid and they didn't promote someone already at the library, they hired external management and started over -Turnover rate is about 80% every 6 months in all departments -Mostly they hire old crochety lonely nasty people -Branch managers are giant snowflakes who act like little royalty and you have to tiptoe around eggshells with them all the time -Pay was not great

Pros

Respect your boundaries outside of working hours; depending on the branch, most tasks are reasonable and easy; friendly co-workers

Cons

Typical cons of working in a very regulated environment - strict on hours/clocking in and out, unrealistic dress code (no jeans), training requirements, internal politics, low pay -- but you work at a library so it's what you'd expect, and the rest of the job is fine enough that you can live with it
