Pros

Talented, smart, and hard-working employees

Cons

Terrible management and culture. The CEO and other key executives are agents of chaos, pure and simple. They say they follow an EOS structure and value openness, transparency and accountability. However, their actions convey just the opposite. Management fosters confusion, paranoia, and backstabbing -- and often participates. Communication is erratic and condescending. CEO and other executives blame everyone around them for their problems. CEO is hypersensitive and has a very fragile ego. He sees insubordination and treachery everywhere he looks and is quick to accuse people around him with little to no evidence. He goes around the industry saying what an upstanding guy he is, but he's anything but. He and other managers like to threaten and punish. The second-tier managers obey his every whim, either because they have drunk the Kool-Aid or fear for their own jobs. The whole environment is vindictive, petty, and unhealthy. This company has to have one of the highest employee turnover rates in the industry.

My name is Mark Johnson, and I am the CEO of Star. My team and I are always interested in how to improve culture and increase retention. While the bulk of our team currently has an average tenure of 17.35 years, I recognize your experience while working with us was different and you feel there was high turnover and other negative factors during your employment. I would like to talk with you in detail to understand your experience. If you’re open to a conversation, you can reach me directly anytime at mjohnson@engagestar.com. For potential candidates of Star, our focus has been to create a thriving and employee-centered culture. Our leadership team is dedicated to engagement and retention. Pros

The building is a very nice, comfortable space to work in.

Cons

Leadership is stuck on business practices from the 90's. The building is a facade for the very dysfunctional culture inside. There is one highly toxic individual who has been allowed to abuse co-workers with no consequence. Many talented, strong leaders have been let go over the years and through Covid while they hang onto others who are ok just doing what they're told. The CEO micro manages every department, every activity, and every person but unfortunately his leadership is outdated which squashes new ideas and holds everyone back. I don't like to provide negative reviews but decided to contribute here because I do not recommend this company to anyone that asks me about open positions. They are actively recruiting for the revolving door of employees but I'd hate to see more people walk into this mess.

Pros

I loved the co workers I got to interact with daily, super helpful and great to collaborate with! When I left the company, I didn't get my final paycheck so I reached out to HR and my final check was sent out to me immediately. HR was super apologetic and even called me back a few days later to make sure I received the final check payment which I really appreciated. Minimal travel is a possibility.

Cons

Held to high standards and super fast paced. Hard to follow internal processes and stay organized. Most employees are salary employees and you are expected to work many hours and be available at any point in time, weekends, nights ect... Hard to establish work life balance when your workload is constantly at high capacity and you dont have anyone to fully back you up if you ever have to be out a day or take PTO day. Manual processes, you have to fill out a ADP time card daily... meaning you have to code each days time to what project work and have spent your time on. This took time to complete daily and it was not billable work so you had to just find time in your day to keep track of time and complete time card each day. Lots of clean up work or just misc to do's got pushed so you had to bring work home with you to complete to get everything done. Hard to keep up, as busy season seemed to be year round since you had to be 80% billable each day. Training is hard, as everyone else is busy so it's hard to get questions answered and the process is daunting as there is an SOP, but it is VERY lengthy. They don't have year over year chances for a raise. It's a rigorous review process for promotion or raise that you may or may not receive. Star doesn't seem to invest in the great employees to keep them happy.
