Selfish, borderline abusive leadership

Pros

I worked with some wonderful, talented, creative people who just happened to stumble into the same terrible experience as me.

Cons

The owner of the company is a complete narcissist with little to no actual training in the creative side of producing newspapers, but that will not prevent him from acting like he invented the craft. During my time there, I saw many examples of verbal abuse to employees, especially on the editorial side. Wages are not fair, and it is made very clear that most people are not valued at all. I also saw demotions of others based on petty disagreements or an issue that was usually his own fault. Be prepared to work with a grown man who behaves like a 12-year-old. Most of the people I worked with at the time have left, and I sincerely hope he took that as a message to change, but given the attitude I knew when I was there, I doubt it.

Pros

Creative freedom. Great employees help make up for horrible management.

Cons

Extreme understaffing led to consistently working 60+ hours per week without overtime compensation in an effort to meet unrealistic expectations set by ownership that lacks an understanding of journalism and is willing to compromise ethical standards for financial gain. Benefits are virtually nonexistent. Ownership is not receptive to feedback, does not value employees as individuals or prioritize their well-being, and fails to take accountability for persistent issues with organization, inadequate staffing and communication. Heavy push to rely on AI to save time or replace entire roles with no regard for needed training or journalistic ethical standards.
