Pros

Artists consist of some of the most talented creatives you'll find in the industry, who are unfortunately stifled and held back from their full potential because of management.

Cons

I left earlier this year on my own accord, but seeing how management continues to treat its employees and continues to lie about how the company is in a good place, I have to speak up. Firstly, don't ever trust anything management says to you. It's how they fooled myself and others to join the company and stay as long as I did. Second, management will never listen to your feedback about the company unless you only have good things to say. If you bring up any issues, you are told "it's not your place", "don't speak for others" and "don't worry about it, you're thinking too much into it." At their worst, management will gaslight you and make you feel like you're lying about your concerns or that no one else shares those same concerns. The company is mismanaged and production is bottle-necked at every turn, and the fault is on the CEO. He never has a plan and consistently changes his mind on everything. One day he likes something, another he hates it. If something is going out to publish that day, suddenly he doesn't like the dialog. He makes production needlessly problematic. He insists on reviewing and physically touching every single aspect of the pipeline. This is due to his inability to trust his employees. Even the managers he's employed are not immune to this. Everything has to be approved by him, and I mean EVERYTHING. Every aspect, every step. Everything. Even when the company was at 30 employees, we couldn't manage to release more than 2 titles, and it's because he consistently shelved projects, redid projects, or just canceled them altogether. And if you're an artist, he will take your work and make adjustments without ever telling you. This leads to characters in the final publishing looking incorrect or wonky. One of the biggest reasons I left was because I felt like I no longer contributed anything. When the work you've done goes live, and it no longer looks like your own, you feel unaccomplished and unwanted. The company prides itself in being an ally to the LGBTQ community, but that couldn't be further from the truth. One of the reasons I joined the company was because I strongly believe this demographic needs more positive media that represents them. Unfortunately, you quickly learn that management couldn't care less about the LGBTQ community. They have no engagement with them, nor do they ever make the effort. Even LGBTQ employees at the company were disregarded of their personal experiences, and in many cases were looked down upon or mistreated. It was disgusting. There was even a case where we were marketing our app during voting season and creating distasteful politically driven images. These social media posts even went as far as adding Alt-Right hashtags. You know, the very people who the LGBTQ community would NOT want to associate with. When I brought this up, management didn't understand why this was a big deal, made excuses, and told me "don't worry about it." The company also kept problematic employees on staff even after concerns about safety in the workplace were brought up by multiple employees. The CEO cares so much about public image and how well HE is doing, that he will overlook or disregard anyone else. He avoids conflict between employees and just tells everyone to "be professional" even when there's clearly a wrong party in the conflict. He so much wants to be in charge, and take credit for everything, but will always fail to take responsibility or step up as a leader. Management at Stela was the most immature and unprofessional I've ever experienced in my entire career.

Pros

1) At least the interns get paid (low wage, but still better than free!). 2) If you're an intern, you do get paid to make comics (not many of those opportunities around). 3) If they'll let you work on something for long enough (before pulling you off the assignment for another assignment), you do have an opportunity to learn and work on craft (as long as they don't interfere). 4) They were publishing some really great comics by cool comics creators (but sadly that seems like it's over now).

Cons

1) It seems like the "glory days" of this company are already done and gone... apparently the key people who drove this thing in the beginning were also the ones who had the vision, and they're gone. 2) Management doesn't seem to like or understand comics or entertainment. 3) Management tries to keep everyone silo'd so they don't talk to each other. But that also means that no one really knows what is going on. 4) Worst company communication to employees. It seems to be getting worse, too. 5) If you don't speak Mandarin, forget about becoming part of the innercircle. Management only appears to trust you if you speak Mandarin. 6) Social Media - even though we have editors and a PR person working for us, they don't seem to run anything by them, so social media posts are always filled with errors and poor grammar. 7) Management has no respect for the work itself. They don't have a creative bone in their body and don't seem to understand how to cultivate a culture of creativity. 8) They apparently had really good benefits and perks before, but Management keeps cutting back so he can waste money on other things. 9) Creatively, you will go crazy. Hold low expectations, b/c management will find new ways to ask questions that make you think "This person works in Entertainment? How? Huh?" 10) Fake review on here attributes frequent changes of direction to the generic "startup curse", when it's really just the poor leadership, and the panicking of Management. 11) Management can't get out of people's way and let them do good work. They seem to constantly interfere, and they can't finish anything. I move from project to project but none of the projects ever gets finished. They all just kind of sit there half done. 12) Management is indecisive... they have serious problems making decisions. Once they do, they'll change their minds. Multiple times, and often. You can burn weeks while they flip flop back and forth. 13) Management will also refuse to write down any of his decisions. That way they can tell you later that they "never said that", even though multiple people heard them and wrote it down in their notes. 14) Management blames others for everything. He doesn't take responsibility for the company or for his decisions, or for his missteps - and that seems to echo through management. 15) Management doesn't listen. Literally. I've seen other employees tell them things multiple times in multiple meetings, then later on they'll get outraged in "surprise" at something happening that everyone told them was going to happen. They don't pay attention, and they don't read their emails.

Pros

The art team is solid and super talented. They will be the best people you will ever work with.

Cons

The CEO does not want to be in charge of a company but does not want to give up any control. He does not trust anyone to do their jobs and frequently undercuts them and takes away their ability to do anything until they are either beaten down into submission or leave the company entirely. He also frequently changes his mind and cannot give clear direction as to what he wants to see and, ultimately, he'll do it himself in the end, painting over or editing the work of others without their knowledge. The marketing team is huge for how small the company is and how ineffective their marketing style is. Most social media post are lazy and borderline offensive. Management allowed and even encouraged a hostile work environment to grow and did nothing about it except to discourage folks from reporting issues under the guise that we needed to be 'professional', despite the ones creating the issues not acting remotely professional. They allowed two men to harass, bully, intimidate and threaten women and queer creators at the company with no repercussions or care for the mental and physical damage such actions were doing to those targeted.
