Pros

Remote company, decent benefits options, home-office stipend and tech reimbursements

Cons

I'm very disappointed in my experience working with Steno. I can't answer for others or explain all the 5-star reviews, but I personally would not recommend working for this company. I'm not going to deny, there are some great people and a ton of talent across the board, but these positives were often clouded by managers with huge egos. Also, be mindful this is a start-up and it's very obvious due to the lack of processes, in addition to, the weekly changes made to the little process that was set in place. It can be hard to keep up even if you're someone that thrives in that kind of environment. Their People Operations team needs work. If you're wanting any discussion to remain confidential, then don't reach out them them. Work-life balance is terrible. If you're Eastern Time, be aware you'll be working East coast and West coast hours every day despite what they tell you. I have a lot more I'd like to say, but it's not even worth it at this point. My advice would be to avoid Steno. An outsider looking in is likely only seeing this company through rose-colored glasses, but as a former employee I can certainly say this is not a 5-star company. All in all, I don't have any positive things to say about Steno aside from it's a remote working opportunity if that's all you care about.

Thank you for submitting this feedback. It’s true — Steno is no different from other startups in that things are constantly changing and moving as we drive towards our audacious goals. This environment is not for everyone and requires flexibility and adaptability from all employees for the whole team to succeed. At Steno, we care deeply about our employees and work with our managers to create an environment where our team members can feel supported, have a sense of belonging, and have the opportunity to thrive. While we hope that no one ever leaves disappointed with their experience here, we know this isn’t for everyone. We appreciate the time you took to write this review and we truly wish you the best of luck and success in your future endeavors.

Pros

Free desktop set up - monitor, chair, desk that raises, keyboard, footrest, extension cord.

Cons

There were at least 3-4 meetings a day, at least for the production team. It was absolutely unnecessary especially when we had Friday meetings to "bond". And the worst part is that you have to keep your camera on, which truly was the most draining part of working here. I think I could have lasted longer if people were allowed to have their zoom cameras off. I understand that it's to connect but not everybody needs to connect, we can connect if we want to but some of us just don't care about getting to know our colleagues we're here for a paycheck. There was also a lot of redundancy which is due to the system not being fully built and even with some things being built you still have to input the same info that you just checked off into another task on the same page. Also expect to work 9 hours a day. Not necessarily a Con but most of the top people are all related. And an upper-level manager is misogynistic.

Thank you for the feedback and sharing your viewpoint with us. As a fully remote organization, we are intentional with our meetings and face time across the business, though we are always striving for a balance between efficiency and effective communication, and on the lookout for ways to streamline our meetings. From what you described, it sounds like we didn’t meet your expectations on frequency of meetings or work efficiency, and we take that feedback to heart as we try to grow, evolve our processes, and better serve our team’s needs and working styles. We are cognizant of giving our employees mind space to think, learn, and create, and we have adjusted our team and company-wide meetings to enable better work-life balance. That said, we do value regular meetings and face-to-face collaboration, as they are an integral part of how we build and maintain our culture, how we constantly innovate, and how we deliver highly reliable service to our clients, despite being fully remote. As a former teammate, we’re sorry we didn’t get a chance to talk through the concerns you raised, particularly if you had an experience with someone that left you feeling uncomfortable. For all employees, we always encourage direct communication with leaders to share feedback and partnering with our People Operations team when additional guidance and support may be necessary.

Pros

Being in the field, remote work, building relationships with clients. Company founders are really nice. Great benefits. Great pay.

Cons

Sales managers are like a robots. No empathy for the team doesn’t try to bond with team. Doesn’t know how to be a cheerleader and praise. Only tells you what you are doing wrong and cares only about KPI’s and numbers. Lots of stress and anxiety. Lots of sales reps walking out and quitting. You will just be another number here not a person. Too many sales meetings. 2-3 a week plus a all hands meeting and 1:1. So about 4 a week. That’s way more than needed. Unlimited PTO but if you take any time off be ready to explain why your “emails/dials” are low for that week. I was told until you have high numbers you can’t take time off.

Thank you for this feedback and sharing your perspective. Leading with empathy is an integral part of our hospitality mindset, but something that can be challenging to perfect. From the experience you described, it sounds like we didn’t quite meet that mark. In partnership with growing that empathy, we remain humble and open to growth when we receive feedback like this. Our team members come from many different industries and backgrounds. We value the contributions each individual makes to our work environment but recognize that the approach might be different for each manager and each team. As a team, we promote feedback and open communication so we can better understand how we can align those various perspectives to achieve a common goal, but most importantly, ensure everyone feels welcome and supported. As a former team member, we’re sorry we didn’t get a chance to talk through these concerns and find a resolution while you were here with us. Generally speaking, we’d encourage any employee to reach out to their leaders to share feedback directly, or partner with our People Operations team so we can better understand how to support their experience at Steno.
